Progesterone Shots

Hello mamas! This is my first time posting here but I am hoping for a bit of insight/advice regarding progesterone shots.

I had my DD at 35 weeks and am now pregnant with my second child. My OB recommended progesterone shots to give me the best chance of carrying this baby to term. I have opted to get them and will have my first one on Friday.

I hate to say this but I am really nervous about the shots themselves. The nurse said that it is very thick and has to be given over the course of a minute.

Does anyone have experience with these shots? Am I right to be nervous or are they not as bad as what I am imagining?

Obviously, I am doing this because it is best for my child so I'm doing it regardless. I'm just wanting some insight into what I should expect. :-)

Re: Progesterone Shots

  • I had the shots from 16 weeks through 34w before I delivered at 34w5d. Each week the nurse would alternate between hips/butt cheeks. I know some get the shot in the upper butt cheek, but my nurse was giving them to me in my hips. Normally it only hurt for a few minutes or the area would be tender for a few hours depending on how you would lay on it.

     Good luck.

  • I totally understand your nerves. I was really nervous too before starting. I started this pregnancy at 16 weeks and am on week 23 now. My husband was trained to give them to me at home. I can honestly say that it is not bad at all. Most of the shots I've barely been able to feel either going in or at the site afterwards. A few of them hurt a it going in and then the site was mildly sore to the touch for a day or 2 afterwards but they are way, way easier than i had made them out to be in my mind beforehand. Hope you have a similar positive experience. Good luck!

I'm taking them. Started at 15 weeks and I'm now 26 weeks. I'll have my 13th shot on Saturday. I'm a needle-phobic and I can honestly say they're not as bad as I was anticipating. They do hurt a little sometimes but if you ice the area a little bit before and rub your hip/buttock after the injection it helps. We've had one bad stick in all these weeks where DH hit a vein and had to re-inject, but one out of 12 isn't bad. You get used to it after awhile.

I'd say it's unpleasant, but not especially painful. And if it does hurt a bit it doesn't last long.
