Mine!

How do you handle that? DD has learned this lovely word at MMO and she will seriously lose her sh!t if you try to take whatever she has decided is "mines" at the moment. Time out? Take it away?

Re: Mine!

  • I can't wait to hear people's answers.  I have no idea where DS learned this but he says "Mise!" and I can't help but think he's trying to proclaim he's a little miser!  It doesn't matter where we are:  museum, library, etc, he thinks everything is his!

  • i just take it away and let her throw her tantrum. they get shorter and less screamy (for the most part) as she starts to understand not everything is MINE!!

  • LOL @ miser

DD does this at home, store, everywhere....I just tell her she needs to be nice. It's NOT hers and if she doesn't want to be nice it's home, naptime, time out whatever is suitable for the situation and she usually says ok and acts nice...I think they're just testing the waters...

  • Depends on what it is.  If it's the remote to the tv then I take it away and he flips.  If it's a rubber spatula I just let him play with it.

Ok, this is good to hear. My H does not understand that ignoring her is punishment. I'm glad to hear it's working for y'all.

  • This is loosely related.  I see that others here have said that their kid says "Mines" with an "s."  Every time I try to correct Aiden, he thinks I'm proclaiming that the item is mine.  It's like a Who's On First situation every time.

When my niece went through this phase we had it out with each other.  She would steal my stuff and be all like "MINE!"  I was like uh uh little girl, it's MINE.

Aunt Wino can be such a bish sometimes.  I guess it's because I'm the youngest of all the cousins...it's not all my fault

  • A learned it at daycare within 2 weeks of starting (we started at 16 months). I'm not really sure if I handle it correctly, but I do a couple different things:

If it's an item he's not supposed to have, and he announces it by proclaiming, "mine" and running away, I'll take it from it.

If he's playing with another child and does it, I sit with them and we practice taking turns. If he's unable to take turns or play nicely, the toy gets taken away.

If he's just walking around the house with a toy and telling everyone, "mine" I ignore him.
