Progesterone and Missed miscarriage question

Hi ladies, I have a question that I really haven't been able to answer via google. My doctor's appointment isn't until October 9th so I thought I'd ask you ladies.

A bit of history about me, I had a missed miscarriage in April at 10 weeks. I had a few small symptoms, some small pains unsure if they were actually related or random, and very light brown spotting. Other than that I just had feeling something was wrong. Turns out that the baby stopped growing after the u/s a couple of weeks before.

So now I'm pregnant again they've put me on Progesterone suppositories. I know Progesterone will hold off your period when you are trying to get pregnant. So would the Progesterone disguise symptoms of miscarriage and make you still feel pregnant? I'm not really having any symptoms besides some random small pains here and there. But my biggest fear is that this will happen all over again. That the progesterone will stop me from spotting and therefore knowing I miscarried. I know I'm being paranoid, but I just thought I'd get some opinions. Does anyone have any info on this?

Re: Progesterone and Missed miscarriage question

  • Progesterone typically prevents bleeding, not spotting. And brown spotting is benign.  It's red you neeed to worry about.  If your body doesn't do the work of removing the pregnancy, you won't bleed, hence the missed miscarriage.  However, if your body is determined to remove the pregnancy, you will bleed no matter what.  Everyone is different though.  I bled through my progesterone supps when I had a failed cycle, but never through PIO.  However, i have had some brown spotting before my U/S last week and everything was A-OK.

Good luck, and try not to worry so much about it. Easier said than done I know.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • I'm sorry for your previous loss.  I don't know if progesterone would have the effect you're worried about.  I know you said your 1st appt isn't for a while, but you can still call and ask.  I know you said you already looked on google, but normally during pg, it's usually a good idea to stay away from Dr. Google (almost always worst case scenario).  Good luck and I hope you have a long and healthy pg.

  • I was on progesterone last time (injections) and still had spotting and felt that something was wrong.  I went on to m/c.  This time, I am on prog again, but so far have had no spotting.  I don't think it really had any masking effects for me.

  • My doc told me that progesterone can "amplify" some of the symptoms of pregnancy -- like fatigue. I can't remember everything and I don't have a full list because I'm on a generic progesterone supp that a pharmacy compounds for me so no handout. But I don't think it will make you *feel* pregnant.

Keep in mind that progesterone can make you spot though! I didn't realize this and was really scared when I started spotting four days after beginning P. FX for you!

This is especially true of the suppositories which can irritate your cervix. Good luck.
