Returning items, yes or no?

So my MIL bought us the swing we registered for (Fischer Price Little Lamb) but now we found a very similar one ( Fischer Price Snugabunny ) used, but like new for less than half the price. Would it be tacky of us to return it considering MIL will be a frequent visitor in our home?

Re: Returning items, yes or no?

  • If it were any other guest (friend/coworker) I'd say return it and use the extra $ for something else baby-related.

It's not a homemade blanket or a treasured hand-me-down.  If she's already given you the swing than it's yours to do whatever you want with it.  But, IMO you shuld give her a heads up (if you're close to her) and offer her the difference in $ (which I'll bet she'll turn down).  That way if she notices she won't automatically be upset.

On the other hand; if your MIL is the type to be offended by this than I'd keep the swing she bought.

  • I just looked at these 2 items on Amazon.  They are incredibly similer in look.  Do you think she would really notice?  I honestly would return the new one and get the used.  I wouldn't mention it.  I also would go with the Snugabunny just for the simple fact that you can plug it in!!!

This. I would imagine she would get the most bang for the buck. Also is the Little Lamb swing have a plug in or is it just batteries? We bought the Little Lamb used so I don't know if the newer models have the ability to plug in. We had to buy a new swing (the Snugabunny) and LOVE that you can just plug it in.

    This!

  • I would definitely return it if you find one for 1/2 the price is excellent condition.  I'm sure she wouldn't mind since you can use the $$ for some other things you needed.  Maybe let her know what you picked up instead.  It would be different if it were sentimental...but a swing is not.
  • How do you think your MIL would take it if you returned the swing?  My MIL would definitely notice and be hurt.  Even if I showed her the cost savings and offered the monetary difference to her.  So I personally would keep the gifted swing.  And I'm all for saving money and buying used.

MIL did buy us stuff for which we didn't register andI know she won't notice I returned.  For example- one of those flexible foam tubs to bathe baby in the sink.  We bought a baby tub for $5 at a consignment shop and don't need the foam one.  That's $50 I will gladly use for diapers and MIL will never be the wiser.

    All of this Yes

  • I'm all for getting bang for your buck, but when it comes to gifts I don't really feel it is my place because frankly it isn't MY buck.

If it is an item you would never use or you got a duplicate gift, then absolutely return it and use the money. But if it is something you specifically wanted until the moment something "better" came along... as the gift giver I would understand logically but my feelings would probably still be hurt. I would feel like you found my gift inadequate and just wanted my money.
