As a nation, I think we're all too easily offended. But...I live in a town with a sizable Native American population. So I just want to be particularly sensitive to my neighbors. If I dressed my two kids up as indians, do you think that would be offensive? I'm more into classical costumes (like mummies, witches, cowboys, etc) and I think an Indian costume will be easy enough for me to sew. We're actually going to a Festival of Culture here in town today. Do you think it's appropriate to ask one of the Native Americans there? Am I over thinking this? I just remember reading a while back about how saying 'Indian style' for crossing your legs was offensive and I had no idea! TIA!

Re: Indian Halloween Costume Offensive?
This is the best idea! I think it would be offensive if you went on to have your child play-act the way we did when we were younger. You know... saying "How!" or doing the whole covering the mouth while going "Oh oh oh oh" thing.
Cute, cute, cute idea. Do this! I would think your neighbors would be flattered.
I am married to a Navajo/Iroquios and he does find it offensive. At first I didn't understand, but now I have come to understand his sentiments. Here's a good article that is objective that gives a good explanation of how some costumes can be offensive/racist.
