So my grandmothers name is Portia and I have always thought it was a pretty name. My daughters name is Juliet so I like the Shakespeare connection. My DH thinks Portia sounds like a stripper name. Thoughts?
ETA: Porsche is a car, and if you were going to name your kid that, I would say Stripper. Porsha, I would say you can't spell. Porcia is legit, but makes me think of pigs.
Portia is a beautiful Shakespearean name given to strong women in both Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar.

These are my thoughts exactly! Plus I would be honoring a strong beautiful woman my grandmother.
I have always loved the name also but have to admit that I didn't want to deal with the car connection. Even though I think of shakespeare, I'm not sure most people would. It's a beautiful name.
IMO it's not a stripper name. But if your husband sees it that way then I think he should get veto power. If he were iffy about it then I'd tell you to keep it on your list and see if he changes his mind. But, the fact that he said "stripper name" really shows that it's not his style.
It's too bad that he doesn't like Portia, because it's a beautiful name. But I really believe that both parents need to at least like the chosen name.
I have never really liked it, just not my style but I don't see how an actual name and it's been in usage since Shakespeare can sound like a stripper. Even if there were strippers with that name it would meed more than that to convince me I love Margaret and Maggie and google searches of those are full of women who probably "just need money for college."
I've always thought Portia and Mercedes were beautiful names but DH refuses to let me name our daughter that because the car link to his sister's name (Carrera) is too obvious.

I disagree just because it's her grandmother's name. I think a strong family connection trumps the veto. Maybe just read DH some more Shakespeare? He may see reason.
I also thought of actress Portia De Rossi. Love the name, and naming after your grandmother is awesome.
Not at all. I love Portia! I love it with your daughter's name, and I love the family connection. It's definitely a winner.
This. Beautiful name, and I would never in a million years make the "stripper name" connection. Then again, I don't spend much time in strip clubs, so maybe I'm out of the loop on that one.

I like it. I've been thinking about this name lately as well. I get the car associations, but that's Porsche, and a slightly different pronunciation. Plus, it's not a popular Shakespearean name, so most people wouldn't make that connection right away.

This! Maybe it's regional but around here it's all the trashy spellings of Bryanah, and the Add-A-Lyn-To-Everything names that are stripper names.
I think it is a pretty name.
Lucky Mom to 5 girls: 09/97, 06/99, 10/02, 11/04, 04/08 & Peanut #6 due in April!
In everyday use people won't know the spelling, and it's more likely that the general public will think car than think Shakespeare. I
would steer clear of using this as a first name. Juliet and Portia is a bit over the top matchy Shakespeare for me. Plus, if your DH hates it, it should be off the list.
If honoring your grandmother is very important to you, perhaps your DH would be willing to consider it for a middle name? That might be a good compromise.

He doesnt hate it. Just worries about the stripper association. I am definately open to using as a middle name. We are having twins aren't finding out the sex so we have 8 names to come up with. This is so tough.

Porsche is a stripper name. Portia gets to squeek in because of its spelling.

No worries. I am super picky on names so I completely understand that not everyone is going to like the name you choose.

I think Portia is a pretty and different name! I like it!
I don't think it's a stripper name. I'm not sure if it's really my style, but if you love it, go with it!
