Which Store to register at???

Good evening ladies

I want to start a registry now, I'm 19weeks and live in New York City, I'm a  FTM and I have started getting little things here and there and some of my very close friends have purchased Items for the baby, so I want to start narrowing down the items I still need. My dilemma is that living in NYC the stores easy accessible are BabiesRUs, Macy's and other high end stores that I will prefer not to register in, since I don't want to make my friends broke for our baby even though many wouldn't care. I have look at Target and Walmart, why? they both carry a lot of the items I will like for a lot less, specially Walmart, so my concern is that Target as well as Walmart are not located in the immediate NYC area (Target has various locations in Queens none in Manhattan or Brooklyn where most of our friends live and work and lets not talk about Walmart the closest one to NYC is in LI and then the rest in NJ). I don't know what to do? Walmart offers a pick up at store option so I don't know if we can arrange with the store that once something is purchased from the registry they put it aside and my Hubby can then pick it up. They also have .97c shipping in some items, but not all of the items. So ladies what will you recommend we do?? TIA

I registered at stores near where people who would buy gifts lived. I think if there is BRU in NYC then just registering there is fine. BRU is the biggest name in baby shopping (IMO) and it seems like people aways look their first. If you have people who might order online, or just for your personal needs, then WaMart or Amazon.com would be fine, but don't expect too much. 

What about a speciality store in NYC? Is there any place known for being the place to get baby gifts? What about a Pottery Barn Kids, Land of Nod or Restoration Hardware Baby? 

Your friends are more likely to spend more money on a gift than to go through the hassle of coordinating shipping from WalMart. I know this sounds terrible and even backwards, but you should try to make it easier (not cheaper) for your friends. If they truly want to be frugal, they will search on their own for the same item somewhere else.  

I know when I shop for others, I am looking for convenience.

You could always do an Amazon registry... that way you can find the items you want for the cheapest price and people can have them delivered to you or to themselves.

I registered at BRU and Amazon. I price shopped and made sure the place that had the item cheaper was the one I used for that item. I didn't think many people would use Amazon, but the majority did! Between the amazing prices and free shipping (on a lot of items) and not having to go to a physical store, I think people appreciated the convenience. 

 And just to add one more thing: Amazon is amazing because it keeps track of who bought you the actual gifts. They have a "thank you" list that you can reference.

I had the worst experiance with making my registeries and people using them. I would register where ever you want and hope people actually use them. Out of 40 some guests at my shower 2 people actually bought things that we put on the registery. I am mean I was not expecting people to buy the BIG things on the list but put them on there as an option. I had stuff on there that was a couple dollars all the way up to $100ish. And to think we now have a long list of things that I have to buy (which is fine) but my point that I didn't see the point in actually making mine cause no one used it! Oh well got some gift cards and will be putting those to use to get a few things we are going to need for him before he arrives! Good luck and I hope people use yours.

I live in NYC as well and I registered at BRU for "furniture" items like baby gyms, room monitors, etc., and another at Target for "care" items like bath towels, blankets, etc.... not for any other reason than I liked what each store had for those two categories (between both registries the total item count is abt 60)

That said I probably wouldnt do more than 2 registries. Most people I know, whether for wedding, house warming or baby, have at least 2 registries so if the guests cant afford (or dont want to spend that much) the items on one registry they always have the option of the other "cheaper" one. I also believe that most people dont purchase from the registry per se, but but use it as a guide and will shop around to find the same item at a cheaper price somewhere else. I'm actually good for that - I'll look at your registry and bc I work for a dotcom I know that with a few clicks I can probably find whatever item you wished for a few dollars cheaper. Will you know that I got it from WalMart i/o Bergdorfs unless I told you? No.. you're probably just happy that I got you that present.

Also - if many of your friends wont care where you register why should you? Just pick the store or stores that carry what you wish for and channel all of that nervous energy into choosing your wishlist :-)

I think you're fine with BRU. I registered there and they have a wide variety of items at all different price ranges. You could also consider registering with Amazon which I have heard a lot of people are doing. That way people could just purchase online if they don't mind doing that.

I registered at target and buy buy baby, I would have done bru but location wise it's one block from buy buy baby and my items were all priced about the same. Buybuybaby baby sends out coupons constantly and take bed bath and beyond. I would have been fine with BRU. I registered for a lot of smaller items and things I didn't mind having multiples of at target, mostly because they have a poor return polivpcy. DH and I are both teachers who will have multiple work showers and most of the teachers will go in and buy bigger items togethers at buy buy baby or go by target and grab the smaller items.

I would register at BRU- their return policy is decent, they have a pretty good selection of items, and it sounds like it is conveniently located for your babyshower guests.  If your friends/family are pretty internet-savvy, maybe consider an Amazon registry too...
