Should I be concerned?

DD has had a reaction to ranch dressing a few times now. When she eats it and it gets on her face, she gets a rash where it touches her skin. It does seem to itch or hurt her but takes a while to go away. I can't figure out what ingredient is irritating her. Should we just avoid ranch, or go to the doctor right away?

Re: Should I be concerned?

  • I would avoid ranch and call the doctor on Monday. Real ranch usually has buttermilk in it. Maybe that's what bothering her?
  • My kids do this, also when ketchup gets on their face. I think it has something to do with the vinegar in it. Doesn't hurt to ask though.

  • My ds has this with Catalina dressing.  We've just stopped giving it to him.

  • LO1's Skin would turn red where eggs touched, no other symptoms. So I avoided it and retried every 3 months until he outgrew the allergy at 15mos.
Since its not life threatening I never took him to the doc over it.

  • I would stop giving it to her, and call the pedi.

  • Thanks ladies. I will avoid it, and call the nurses line next week.

  • My daughter gets this with some foods, the pedi called it contact dermatitis.  It doesn't hurt her and isn't really an allergic reaction. We were told not to worry about it and to continue feeding her those foods so long as its not bothering her.

  • DS had this issue with pretty well any dairy for a while. The rash went away on its own and I never worried about avoiding dairy. He grew out of it and now is fine with all dairy.
  • Scout05's daughter had a skin reaction to eggs and she was told that it could get worse and to bring her daughter in for allergy testing.

Id call the pedi on Monday and ask for a referral to an allergist.

Hmmm...this is what I was worried about. I had heard that sometimes with allergies you can have an innocuous reaction one time and a bad one the next time. I will call pedi on monday.

  • My older son's face would break out after he ate peanut butter when he was younger, but he's since grown out of it. Both my kids' faces would get rashy from cinnamon (but only when the cinnamon itself directly touched their face). DS1 has since grown out from it, but DS2 still gets a little rashy.

I wouldn't run to the doctor, but I wouldn't feed her that ranch dressing anymore.

Allergies are serious business. DS has the same reaction to a beef sandwich once and I assumed it was the sauce. A few weeks later MIL gave him meatballs and he ended up struggling to breathe. Luckily we already have epipens for his several other allergies. I could never just say that since its only a face rash it's no big deal. It may very well be contact dermatitis DS has it with cinnamon but if she is allergic to an ingredient it's important to find out so you can avoid that ingredient. Please see the pedi!

Thats what I believe scout was told. That the first initial reaction is a "shot across the bow" so to speak. A warning that it could be worse next time.

Not that I want to scare you, but food allergies can be serious. I'd definitely call the doctor and then go from there.

This. DD gets it with tomatoes. It doesn't bother her and she loves tomatoes, so I still give them to her. Unless it is affecting her tummy, I wouldn't worry about it> I wouldn't even call the doc.

  • That sounds like the reaction my kids get when their skin comes in contact with any dairy. I would just keep an eye on her, maybe give her some benadryl, and if you see any swelling of the lips, it seems like she's having trouble breathing, or starts gagging then go to the ER right away, if not, call the Dr on Monday.

This.  Our Pedi told us it's because things like ranch, ketchup, mustard, etc. have vinegar and other acidic stuff in them and that irritates her skin.  He said we definitely don't need to worry about it at all.

  • I would definetly look into it. I asked the Pedi about what I thought was an allergy to bananas, strawberries and something in hamburger helper. So she sent us off for blood work. Apparently she isn't allergic to strawberries, but is allergic to eggs and peanuts. So now we know to avoid them.

Ranch contains eggs, so it could be that that is irritating your LOs skin. It's better to know for sure.

Yes, but these are different than Ranch dressing, which contains egg proteins.

There aren't a lot of common allergens in ketchup or mustard. Salad dressings are totally different.

Again, I think people need to be very careful about potential food allergy posts and telling moms not to worry about reactions. Think about the foods you are comparing.

Very true. When I was a bartender, every single salad dressing we had was on the allergen list.

This is my siggy. Love it.
