My fertility doctor says my pregnancy is 100% not viable based on hcg beta tests and suggests I stop taking progesterone (100 mg twice daily). I am 42 years old. I am 5 weeks and 4 days pregnant and am not bleeding or cramping. Do you consider based on the HCG numbers below that the pregnancy is not viable? Should I continue with taking the progesterone? If I stop, I will likely miscarry.
-4 weeks and 1 day at 163
-4 weeks and 3 days at 310
-4 weeks and 5 days at 482
-5 weeks and 1 day at 831 -5 weeks and 4 days at 887 (today)
*****Update****
Hi, thanks for all your comments. I wanted to update this and let you know that three days later, I went for a second ultrasound and blood work from another doctor. They still found an empty sac and the HCG rose to 1060, no viable pregnancy. Thanks again for all your support.

I would say that slowly rising is still better than not rising.
I hope you'll be just fine! I know the weekend's a long wait.
My HCG was low and slow rising. Last time it was checked (5w) it was 865. Saw HB at 5w6d then they stopped checking my HCG. My doctor said it was completely normal for some and that you shouldn't obsess over numbers. They said they try to discourage patients from having betas drawn unless there is a history of problems...BECAUSE they don't want you to stress over them. They also said people that are on the lower side are usually lucky and don't have severe morning sickness
I also learned that HCG levels can vary from lab to lab. So if you have your blood drawn and they send a vial to Quest and a vial to LabCorp...they will come back different. Every lab uses different methods of testing the HCG. My doctor explained that you should never compare HCG labs from different places.

I will be 100% honest here. Your last beta isn't great. In 3 days, it should have gone up more than by only 56. They all looked decent up until 5w1d, but then the next one wasn't good. However, stranger things have happened. I would wait it out longer, and keep taking the progesterone until either my beta started to go down, or I had an u/s that confirmed that this was not a viable pregnancy, whichever comes first. If the numbers keep rising, even slowly, I would wait it out until 7 weeks. If at 7 weeks, the u/s shows only a blighted ovum, or no HB, then I would accept that it was not a viable pregnancy. If at any point, the number decreases, then that would be my cue and I wouldn't wait for the u/s at that point.
If you need to, don't hesitate to find a second opinion from a new doctor.
Good luck, hope that your Dr. jumped the gun, and that your numbers just aren't following the "typical" pattern.

In my experience, the progesterone is only prolonging a pregnancy that is not viable. ask for a scan, but expect it to be negative. If it would help you come to terms, you should definitely ask for a scan. I've been through 4 failed pregnancies, so I'm not just going to blow smoke up your ass. If I were you, i would stop taking the progesterone. I'm sorry. I know how devastating and confusing it is.
I just completed my 1st cycle of ivf. I'm currently 6 weeks and 1 day today. I have low and slow rising betas

My doctor is not very hopeful, but I am to keep on my medicine until the ultrasound. Which is tomorrow. I'm trying to remain positive but prepare for the bad news at the same time.. Which is extremely difficult. My advice is if you have low and slow levels and it doesn't end happily it's best bc most likely the genetic make up of the embryo wasn't healthy.
