Opinions on existing name....Chayzlee

I love reading the this board and all the honest opinion's that come with it....

My DD's name is Chayzlee Anabella nn Chayz (she is 3), and just wanted to see what a broader audience thought of it. It does have a lot of meaning/reasoning behind it, but I wanted to see what people's gut reactions to it are (lay it on, I have thick skin Wink

  • I will pre-face my explanation of the name choice with the fact that her dad hated all of my orginal choices and all the names he liked were stripper names.....

I'll break it down though-- my dad's name is Charles and my SO's middle name is Chase, thus the "Chayz" part. "lee" is a family middle name on mine and SO's side of the family, and my sister's middle name is LeeAn (my mom and MIL's middle names are Ann as well). My SO is Italian, so it was a condition that a "Bella" was in there somewhere, and Isabella was too popular for me.

I chose to spell it "Chayz" instead of "Chais, Chas, etc" because I thought it was the most phonetic spelling and .

Annnnnnd, my name was SUPER popular growing up, like 2 or 3 in every one of my classes, and I hate being identified by the first letter of my last name.  Unfortunately my DS is going to be faced with the same issues I was (I swear Kaden was not a popular name 10 years ago, but he is already Kaden B. to everyone Sad).

I really was going for something unique with meaning, but not too yoonik........

  • Because I have got nothing but positive feedback from people we meet/friends/family, but I just wonder how many people are really doing this......Hmm or this Confused inside.

Mainly I'm just curious I guess. Makes no difference 'cause we love it and it is very fitting for her personality.

I just don't feel right commenting on names of children that actually exist now. Hypothetical names, I have no problem if I'm asked but telling your that I don't like your kids name seems kind of cruel to me...I voted but I reserve the right to my vote keep private. :-)

Not very good with explaining pronunciation, but the "Chayz"  rhymes with days.

  • Not cool, dude.  Youve already named your child and so the time for comments has passed.

I would have had a different answer had you asked this before your DD was born.

  • Welp, since you ask...

It's pretty awful and I feel bad for your child.

  • We usually dont comment on childrens names who already exsist, but since you asked its fair game imo.

I think the name is awful.  I think  your poll shows that most people feel the same way.

  • I didn't mean to make anyone feel uncomfortable or anything.......that's why I did a clicky poll.

But thanks for the honest responses.

  • if this isn't made up

it's really really super horrible and I feel bad for her when she has to live with that name as an adult (you asked!)

I think it's important to remember that it's her name, and that your family loves her. Maybe they didn't like her name at first (and maybe they've always liked it), but it's her name and it suits her (as you said), and they can't imagine her with any other name.

I honestly believe that regardless of how they felt when you announced the name, they really do love it now. Because kids just "become" their names (or perhaps their names become them?). I think the poll reflects a stranger's reaction (and, really, BNB is a certain demographic), but I don't think it means that every single person who says they love it is lying to your face.

  • I don't like it in and of itself, but if it has meaning and I knew what that was, then it might at least make sense.

ETA:  I don't hate the pronunciation, but I don't like the spelling at all.  I think it would have been much, much better if you had spelled it Chaselee, Chaislee, etc.  Then, at least, it would look like a name.

Ultimately, I think it sounds nice, just don't like the spelling.

    Exactly this!

  • I hate to say it, but you wanted the feedback...

As someone who worked in HR for nearly a decade, if I got a resume for a position and the person's name was "Chayzlee" I would have a hard time calling that person in for an interview no matter how stellar their resume was. I think that your child is going to have a difficult time in life with a name like that not only with being ridiculed by peers but looking ahead to the future. You probably should strongly suggest she goes by her middle name as she gets older, especially professionally.

I also named my kids less common names so they didn't share names with 5 kids in their class like I did. I chose names that were less popular but went with traditional spellings. I think you took the "unique" thing a little too overboard. Making up a name with a crazy spelling is not a nice thing to do to a child and has the potential to really hurt her in the future.

And you're not the only one. This is a documented, research-based phenomenon. I do feel sorry her as she gets older, especially if she chooses certain career paths.

    Yes.

My first thought was "at least she has a middle name she can use to be taken seriously as an adult."
