switching bedtime routine for night out

Have any of you left your LO with a babysitter during bedtime yet?

We've left LO with my ILs once so we could go out to dinner together, but she was younger then (6-8 weeks) and had less of an idea what was going on. I really want another date night with my husband, but now that she's older and more aware, I'm afraid that someone else putting her to bed wouldn't go over well. Our routine is to nurse to sleep, and I don't want to quit that, but I do want a break.

I've thought about us going out after she's in bed, but it would be my ILs watching her, and they're kinda weird. They don't spend much time with her or  us (they're 'too busy') so I doubt they would want to sit around our house with a sleeping baby because there would be nothing in it for them. But I'm also afraid that if someone other than me tried to put her to sleep and  she got a bottle instead of a boob, she'd be pissed. They're also practically strangers to her and she doesn't even like me to leave her alone with her dad.

Especially if you nurse to sleep... have you tried a different bedtime routine and gotten away with it?

  • I don't nurse to sleep, but we have had a few date nights where we left DD with my parents during bedtime routine. It didn't seem to affect her at all. And the next night, we picked up where we left off.

same here... they know my schedule for him (they also watch him while im at work) and they know to keep it consistent...

we haven't had any problems at all...

if you are going to have a babysitter, make sure they know your bedtime schedule and to follow it.

  • We left DS with my parents for bedtime about a month ago.  He nurses right before bed but he didn't have any problems.  He had a bottle at bedtime and swaddled him like we did.  He fell right to sleep and stayed asleep until we came to pick him up.  You may be surprised at how well your LO does because I was a little worried too.

  • I'm so happy to see this post. DH and I have our 3 year anniversary this week, and we desperately need some alone time. I am so nervous at the thought of someone else (probably my mom) trying to get her to bed. Also, for those who had LO at someone elses house, how easy was it to get them back to sleep once you were home. I worry about having to wake her up to get her in her car seat and drive home and then how easily she'll go back to sleep.
