My grandpa's name is Bernard. DS#1 has my other grandpa's name as his middle - James. If we had a DS#2, I thought it would be nice to use the other grandpa's name as a middle. But I've always hated the name. Is it as horrible as I think it is? My other grandpa (James) has a middle name of Philip, so maybe that is a better option. What do you think? First name would probably be Silas.
Re: Is Bernard absolutely horrible as a middle name?
It is, sorry
Does/did grandpa Bernard have a middle name/last name that you could use as DS2's mn?
If not, Philip is a good name
LOVE Bernard!! Such a great name!! Strong, distinctly masculine and spelled correctly... gets two thumbs up from me.
I like Philip. Silas Philip would sound cool! What is Bernard's middle name?
I think what you are trying to do is nice, but Bernard is bad.
I really like it in the context of honoring family. Better to honor both grandpas than the same one twice, IMO.
We're using a grandparent's name for our son's middle--it's not a name I would have chosen for a FN, but I love it because it honors someone important.
That being said, if you hate it and it's going to make you cringe when you see/say it, I wouldn't use it.

Dude, it's a middle name, and it's honoring a family member. I really think you can do just about anything you want in the middle name spot, since it's never used, and I don't think there's any big deal about using Bernard.
If you hate the name, fine. But is it "bad"? No.

DH's name is Bernard. It's a family name, too. At first I thought it was a bit odd, but I'm totally used to it now.
His siblings call him BERN-erd, which he never liked, so he mostly goes by Bernie now.
That being said, it's a great, strong male name! And as a middle name, it has great history. I'd totally use it! Heck, I'd even use it as a first name, in this era of "old man" names making a comback! He'd definitely be the only one in his class.
Ick, no to Bernard.
I think James is a perfect MN! And it makes sense to me that his family would get honoured this time in the name, because it was your family last time.
