Did you read Roald Dahl as a kid?

I loved his books.  DS1 loves to read (well, to be read to) that is his #1 favourite thing, and his current books are getting a bit short/babyish, so I've ordered him some Roald Dahl books.  Do you think he's a bit young still?  He can sit for an hour being read to.

I remember being slightly traumatised by The Witches, and Boy.. but some were pretty benign, right?

I got him James & the Giant Peach, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Danny the Champion of the World, The BFG, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Enormous Crocodile.

Which were your favourites?

  • I remember reading James and the Giant Peach and Matilda and liking both a lot. I think you could still try reading hits at a time to him and see how he does, he may really like them already.

I told dh how we need to buy ds all of those Shel Silverstein books and he goes, "Who!?" Ahhh yeah, even after I said the names of several books he still had no clue! I'm gonna buy them all and make him read them all so he can gain back part of his childhood that he missed!

Tell him that he also used to write for Playboy, and he'll be on board with it! I still have all of my Silverstein books, and they're already in Micah's room! He's come out with new ones over the past few years, so I've been ordering them when they're stupid cheap from Scholastic. I used to read Runny Babbit to DS every day just to crack myself up!

Star - I was obsessed with the Witches as a kid. Loved the book and the movie. I don't think your son is too young to hear a good story!

  • His books are so much fun.  I have all of them in my classroom library.  I love The Great Glass Elevator, The BFG, Matilda, and George's Marvelous Medicine!  They might be a bit too strange and creepy for your DS right now, but it is definitely worth a try to see if he likes them.

Also, I read a few Shel Silverstein poems my class yesterday.  Love him!

  • I liked James and the giant peach and where the sidewalk ends, but I don't think I read any of the either's by either author.

Didn't Silverstein get banned from elementary schools or something?

  • LOVE Roald Dahl. The BFG might be ok for now? They all have a bit of the element of the scary in them, but I think Dahl rightly recognized that kids can handle it. Matilda was hands down my favorite, and I'm dying to get to London where it's been made into a musical. I also really love the film of The Witches starring Anjelica Houston.

  • I love Roald Dahl. My favs are James & the Giant Peach, Matilda and of course Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

I've noticed DD1 liking longer books a lot more now too.She also likes the beginner reader books because I will read them once, she memorizes it, and then reads it to me, She loves "pretend" reading.

  • I still love to read them.

  • BFG was my favourite.  I think you know your child better than we do, but I do remember that many of Roald Dahl books had a very unpleasant undercurrent. Some things he wrote about were so unpleasant they made me uncomfortable.   I read a short story of his once where two boys bullied another and tied him to train tracks. He escaped and ultimately cut the wings off a swan so he could fly away. This was published in a set of short stories for children. I've never or gotten how unhappy the story was.
