Salome?

I met a 4yo on the playground today named Salome and her 2yo sister Marielle.  Although I think Marielle is very pretty, I'm on the fence on the name Salome.

Re: Salome?

  • It's pretty on the surface but I don't really like the historical connotations.

Didn't she have John the baptists head cut off?  Klassy.

  • I really love it. I'm not a Christian, so it doesn't bother me.

And her Grandma told me she wasn't attending DD's preschool b/c it's too Christian (Um, it IS in a CHURCH).  Maybe that's fitting.

  • Historical and pop culture connotations then.  Salome was a seductress who did have John the Baptist's head cut off.  Then she made a reprisal in True Blood this season as a vampire fundamentalist who just met the true death.  I don't think I'd name my daughter Salome Stick out tongue

  • The historical connotations are too uncomfortable for me to want to use. That said, my only association with this name is that my grandmother had an Amish housekeeper named Salome. She liked her a lot. But even weirder that Amish parents would give a daughter this name.

  • Bible reference aside, I think the name is beautiful.

I may be partial though, there is a beautiful woman DH works with named Salumeh, which I think must be the Persian version of the name. I prefer the Salome spelling though.

  • It's NMS, but I do think it's pretty. I'm also not Christian so any references to such would be lost on me.

The "True Blood" thing was all I could think of!
