I now have 3 sets of A+A muslin blankets, 4 fleece blankets, and an assortment of receiving blankets and other baby blankets that match outfits that people have bought him. My Aunt made a quilt for him, my SIL knitted a blanket, and my co-worker is knitting one too. I doubt LO will be using all 20 blankets at once, so what am I supposed to do with the unused ones? Anyone have creative organization suggestions so that they're still easily accessed (not in a dresser drawer or stashed in the closet)?
Re: What do you do with baby blankets?
The ones people make: I put one on the glider (I would use this as decoration mostly, but to cover my shoulders during night nursings when I was freezing), I put one on or in the crib (while we were still using the bassinet), and one laid out on the floor in the basement for the baby to lay/play on. I also used the one I made as a carseat blanket.
The others I'd just have somewhere handy: we have one of those hanging cubby type things in her closet with three "boxes". We put blankets in one, hats and shoes in another, and bibs in the last.
Send the A&As to me?
My SIL said those were her faves and she is so glad she got so many.
She keeps a spare at each grandparents homes, one in each car and a few around the house. That way if she forgets one or it gets dirty she has extras.
I have a little chest that I plan on keeping my extra blankets in.
You could also hold on to some (unopened) to regift later.

We also have one in each car and at grandparent's houses. Plus with DS born 12/4 we had several that were thicker that we used as coverups for his carseat when we went outside. We never got an actual cover up for the seat.
I'm not using a crib skirt, so I'm using these (in a darker color) under the crib. https://www.target.com/p/target-home-natural-seagrass-folio-bin/-/A-12444180 for blankets and such.
I think 4 will fit under there.
I like someone else's idea of turning extra ones into burpies!
I kept receiving blankets in the living room, our bedroom, and the car/ diaper bag to use for diaper changes, the ones that were made I put on the crip, on the glider, and displayed the rest in a cute brown wicker basket in his room. The fleece and quilts I kept in the car and wherever I would put baby on the floor.
Under the crib in baskets
Put hooks on the wall to hang them on
Hang a shelf to put folded ones on
I like all of your ideas.
I was sheepishly wondering how to use a blanket with a baby at all, except for swaddling.
Being a ftm, I feel like such a dork sometimes.
i donated the extra blankets to the nursing home where i use to work at. they really love using them for lap blankets since they are soft and the perfect size. and being that its getting colder they really need it.
i donated the used ones to the human society here in town. they like to use them for bedding for the animals.
We still have - and use - pretty much every baby blanket we've ever been given.
For storage, I'd recommend storing the muslin and receiving blankets in one place and the thick fleece/furry/knit blankets somewhere else. They just have different purposes.
For infants the thin ones are for:
- swaddling or for taking with you so you don't lose a nicer blanket.
- Covering the car seat to block the sun while carrying it or other make-shift sunshades (also draped over stroller at times)
- emergency diaper (don't ask, it was a really really horrible day. Lets just say it can be both diaper and clothing until you get home)
- nursing cover
- infant head prop (in a u-shape around their head in a carseat)
- burp cloth
- seat protector under carseat.
The thick ones are for playing on or for warmth.
For toddlers and older, we used them for blankets for daycare naptime - thin in the summer, thicker ones in the winter. They use them in the car in the winter (no coats under carseat straps) and on road trips for napping. They cuddle with them on the couch while watching TV in the morning and build oceans and forts and magic forests with them in the afternoon.
We have a cube in the den where the thicker ones are stored. Thin ones are with the daycare sheets in a cubby.
