Two Under 2

Diaper Bag

Hello there :)

I've been thinking about what I'm going to do for a diaper bag once I have 2 kids in diapers needing to bring a bag along with them!

I had the idea of getting a backpack with 2 big main compartments and using that so that I don't have 2 separate bags to lug around, and I found 2 Jansport backpacks that seem like they'll work, but I'm wondering what everybody else has done before I go out and buy one!

Re: Diaper Bag

  • I use a back pack and it worked great. I also own a skip hop regular messenger bag which has lots of pockets.

For my side-by-side stroller I got a double skiphop (extra large for twins) and this thing is huge and will fit everything. It also is the only diaper bag wide/long enough to fit on the side by side but it is too large to carry around town.  I love this when we go to the zoo and I have quick access to everything I need. They really give you 2 compartments for everything (one for each kid) but it is pretty large overall.

  • I swear, no matter how hard I try to keep my diaper bag down to the minimum, it's always overflowing with things. I'm such an overpacker.

I'll have to see if I can find that Skip Hop Double in a store somewhere so I can look at it, and see how many nurseries I can bring along with me everyday :)

  • Oddly, when our second came along the diaper bag got smaller and less congested than with one baby. I had a bigger Vera Bradley bag with DD, then downsized to a small Eddie Bauer tote when DS was born. Backpacks are nice because they don't go sliding off and offer a lot of space, just wouldn't fit my needs.

  • You don't think you can keep just 1?  I'm planning to just keep my current bag.  Other than having to throw in an extra few diapers and an extra bottle, I don't see there being much of a need for a bigger bag, unless you are talking overnight travel trips.  I barely carry anything for DD now, have learned to slim it down, but maybe we aren't out as long as you are?  I don't even bring it with me now on quick errands.  For long day trips away from home, I kept back up clothes stashed in the car (if its accessible), and extra toys in the stroller basket, so the bag itself was never very full.

I could be sorely mistaken when #2 arrives!

  • I have the Petunia Picklebottom Boxy Backpack, and everything fits in it for both girls. It can be worn messenger style, or on your back.

The bag I have now is a cheap Babies R Us diaper bag with 1 pocket, and a side thing big enough for 1 bottle. I've ALWAYS hated it, it's disorganized and  tiny.

I've wanted to buy a new one anyway, I just haven't had the excuse :)

  • I recently read that it's best to just keep your car stocked with extra clothes, diapers, etc for both and only keep the bare minimum essentials in your diaper bag.

That way you have your stuff accessible but you're not lugging it all over.

How that really works in practice, I have no idea.  :)
