HI!
I'm a little worried about Colin not talking...he just turned 13 months. He says mama and dada and makes the noise "ooose" for juice and kind of says night night. He says "na na" for night night. Other than that though he's not saying any words!
I read to him all the time and am always pointing at things and saying repeatedly what they are. Should I be worried? He walked at 10 months so he's definitely where he needs to be with that. I'm a FTM so I'm not sure if I should be worried or not!
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Re: 13 Months and not talking...worried
Your 13 month old is saying a lot more than my 13 month old. I wouldn't worry too much. I'm not. My pedi said kids talk at every age. My DH and I were both late talkers but early walkers.
My LO can say mama and dada and ruff like a dog, but that's about it. She is happy, healthy and I know we are doing our best to promote her development. When she is ready she will talk. If it goes on for a few more months, consult your pedi.

He is talking...he is saying mama and dada and two other words.
.My daughter didn't really start talking until the past month. Before that she didn't say anything but babbling until 16 months and we were going to evaluate if she needed an EI at 18 months, but she had a word explosion around then. I would say he is probably fine, but talk to the dr. about it.
It is common for them just to have a few words at that age.

My daughter is the same age and only says Bye Bye and Mama but I'm not worried, and makes the a noise that I think means Yes. She babbles all day long and points things out and makes lots of different sounds - so I think she is talking, just in her own language still! She understands much of what I say, for example if I tell her to get her shoes, or go wait by her highchair, she does those things, so we are able to communicate somewhat already.
You could try teaching a few sign language signs if you (or he) feel a little frustrated. They don't even have to be real signs - for example, DD waves her hands when she's "All Done" eating, or points to her mouth if she "Wants to Eat". Probably not official sign language, but when I ask her & show the sign, if she does it back and makes her yes noise, then we're all on the same page!
Your son is talking...he says 4 words. They don't have to be pronounced perfectly to count as words.
My pedi wanted to see 3 words at 1 yr and 5-10 words at 15 months, so it sounds like he is right on track.
If anyone tells you their 13 month old knows a massive amount of words more than that they're a) lying b) making it sound like something in their head.
Collin is just fine. My Lo knows about 4 words. Hi and kitty are the only ones she uses with frequency (read..all day long).
Your LO sounds right on track, honestly. And I think someone already mentioned this, but babies who tend to walk/crawl on the early side tend to have their language explosions a little later. They're more focused on the large motor skills and less on language development. On the flip side, babies who walk/crawl a little later may tend to have a language explosion a little earlier.
My girls seem to have fallen on each side of that - DD1 didn't crawl until 8.5 months or walk until 12.5 months, but had 5 words (including belly button!) at 12 months. DD2 crawled at 6 months, walked at 10 months, and only says "hi" and "choo choo" at 12 months. Even in the same family, every baby develops differently

Thank you all so much for your advice! I feel a lot better now! My husband pointed out tonight that he makes the same sound and points to a light so I guess that's him trying to say light...so he's techincally saying four words. I guess just things that you read saying they should be saying X amount of words by X amount of time just made me a little worried. Thanks for the reassurance!
That's perfectly fine. His words for juice and night night count, as well.
Our pedi told us that as long as he had 1 word at 1 year, 5 words at 15 months, and 15 words at 18 months, he's developing normally. Don't worry!
Um, actually, that sounds pretty damn good to me. My doc said 1-3 words at 15 months. Your son is already using four.
My DD is 17 months and says probably 10-15 words, but not all the time. Just randomly. And I know she understands more words than she says. I am OK with that.
