safe or not?!

I have a few little patches of ringworm on my leg {yes, i'm officially a gross person} and I have been treating it topically with over-the-counter, anti-fungal cream you would use to treat a yeast infection.  Do you think this is something that is dangerous to baby?!

Thanks girls!

Re: safe or not?!

  • I would call my OB and ask if it is safe. I would also probably go to my pcp to get it checked out because I would be afraid of something spreading to the baby.

Hope you get it taken care of soon!

  • Definitely call your doctor!  Some topicals are even bad for you and not just LO.  My SO had ringworm once and treated it with athlete's foot cream, but that is terrible for your liver.  I'm sure your doctor can suggest something that is safe.

  • I have never had ringworm but I would definitely check with the doctor on what the approptiate treatment would be.

  • Double check with your pharmacist or OB, but generally, if you are using a yeast infection topical cream that your doctor has already approved for use during pregnancy, you should be fine... but you want to make sure it is one based in clotrimazole, because it is the most effective type for ringworm and considered safe during pregnancy (preg cat B). Other anti-fungals sometimes used in yeast infection creams can be ineffective against ringworm, and some are completely contraindicated in pregnancy. Always confirm with the doc and let them know you're using it.

How about natural remedies like tea tree oil?

....Melaleuca is contraindicated in pregnancy... tea tree oil is a toxin and should be avoided if you are pregnant. It's certainly less harmful when used topically than internally, but it's a big no-no in pregnant women. "Natural" is not somehow magically synonymous with "safe".

  • Apple cider vinegar is a natural cure.  Apply it to a towel and hold it on the affected area for 15 minutes a couple times a day.  It should help clear it up.  You can also mash up garlic and hold it against the area.  Alternate between doing these two things.

A diet rich in probiotics and low in carbs will help to keep you from fueling the fungus.
