I have a desk that we bought at a garage sale with the initial intention of turning it into a changing table. My mom bought us a changing table so..the desk is a desk. It is UGLY. Nice bones, but the finish looks like they possibly painted it to look like wood. I can't really tell. I know it is real wood but I'm struggling over what to do to it. White? Don't paint it, stain it? Something trendy like coral/teal/yellow?
Re: DIY'ers advice needed!
I say paint it a cool color! This blog had a great tutorial: https://icreatewithlove.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-new-green-storage-solution.html
I'm just waiting to find the perfect piece of furniture to do it with!
Here is an idea:
Paint the edges fun colors (red, blue, green) all in layers. Then paint the desk white (Or some other color) all over. Sand the edges lightly to make the colors come through.
ETA PIP
Painting would be the simplest for a DIY, a light sanding, priming and painting is all it will take. BUT! Head this warning: if the paint that is on it has red undertones it may be very difficult to cover with a cheap primer. You'll need to prime it with something that can cover oil, if that's what the original paint was and can adhere to latex (assuming you'll go the easy route and use latex).
With red paint if the red leaks through the first coat of primer that primer will NEVER cover up the red, no matter how many coats you do. The red will continue to seep through. For an oil to latex (and generally all purpose, cover everything under the sun including ink) primer, I love BINS shellack based primer. It's my go to.
Good luck!
