if you make your own deodorant

I made some deodorant last night with coconut oil, baking soda and corn starch. It was a really oily, almost liquid consistency so I put it in the refrigerator overnight. Now, it's literally rock solid and impossible to use. I can't get anything out of it.

How do you keep yours at just the right consistency?

  • Hmmm.. Thats the difficultly of coconut oil. It should warm up pretty easily especially with skin contact.. I've heard of people rolling up a pea size amount with their fingers then applying. Also you could add some Shea butter to the recipe to make it firmer.

I gave up on the homemade stuff when I ran out. The baking soda was too harsh for me.

Also you could add more cornstarch to make it more solid. so you didn't have to go buy something else.

  • Mine consists of coconut oil, arrowroot powder, baking soda and tea tree oil. Works great and consistency is perfect. Maybe try the arrowroot instead of the corn starch.

  • I keep mine at room temperature in a jar. I just use the back of my thumbnail to scrape out a little blob and then I rub it in to my pits. It's about the consistency of old school Elmer's paste at room temperature. As soon as it hits my fingers it starts to soften and if it's still firm I hold it in my armpit for a couple seconds to soften it before I spread it around and rub it in.

    Hope that helps!

  • If you pull it out of the fridge and let it warm up for about 10 minutes, you should be able to get it to roll up.  Once it rolls up the first time, you should be able to keep it in the fridge and use it directly from there.  It has always worked that way for me.

  • I've heard of people using apple cider vinegar as deoderant too.  I tried it, but just could not get over smelling like vinegar all day.  Some people swear by it though - guess it all depends on the person.
