Baby Names

Collins?

I don't think I ever posted this here. If I did then I apologize in advance. Dh and I having a hard time with names. We will find out the sex in a few weeks, in the mean time, we both like the name Collins for a girl. I know it's a family surname, but it has no family relation to either of us.

Is it a weird name for a girl?
What do you think for a MN? I'm liking Collins elizabeth. Last name is smith, which I'm not thrilled about what it is what it is.

Re: Collins?

  • I think it's really weird if it is not a family surname for either of you.

Actually, I think it's kinda weird regardless and not remotely feminine, but if it was a family surname it would escape the side eye from me. When I hear it, I just think of Phil.

I get why it would be weird. I found the name on baby name wizard. I really like Emerson Kate and Collins was listed as a sibling name for Emerson. Dh isn't a fan of Emerson, but we both like Collins. It was also the name of the daughter in the movie the blind side.

    Ick!

What's so wrong with a GIRL'S NAME for a little girl?

  • I don't dislike it as much as I thought I would. I would like it better if it had a family connection to either of you.

  • I don't think it works for a girl at all. It seems way too masculine, especially since Collin/Colin is a common boy name. And that's why the S at the end seems weird, too. I think a girl named Collins is as bad as a girl named Josephs or Daniels or something. Sorry!

  • What about FN Elizabeth and call her Ellie? Lost on a MN. I wanted something unique but not made up. With a last name like Smith I wanted something different.

  • With all of the "Ellie's/Ella's/Elle's" out there right now, it's certainly not unique.

This. How about Colleen,  Adair, Blaire, Brynn, Camille, Leighton, Nadine, Teagan?

  • I mean, there are plenty of gorgeous, feminine names out there that aren't overused.  For instance, my daughters' names.  "Celeste" and "Sabrina" aren't super common, but they're also not made up and they're very feminine.  Now, I'm not saying they're your cup of tea, and that's cool, but there are SO many names out there without going with "Elizabeth" or a boys' name.

  • It's the daughter's name on The Blind Side.  I cringe every time I hear it.

This exactly. People would assume a family tie and might be awkward when she has to explain you got it from Blind Side...(kidding)

  • Maybe I'll tell her it was a maiden name if she asks. I kid. My grandmother's maiden name was McKenna, but my cousin named her daughter that. Other than that it's Smith, again ugh, and a McG which isn't going to work.
Perhaps it's back to the drawing board...

  • I only think of a boys name (Colin) or a surname.  I would think it was a really strange name on a girl.  Sorry :(
  • I think it only works if it's a family name. That said, I've heard this name on more than one girl (well, woman, my age), so it must be a "thing."

  • Yep, Collins Smith just sounds like...Collin Smith. Very masculine. I'd like it if it was your choice for a boy, but Collins makes the think of the drink Tom Collins.

  • The first thing I thought of was a show I used to watch called Dark Shadows. One of the characters names was Elizabeth Collins. It's not a bad association...just the first thing I thought of.

I'm not big on surnames as FN. I hope to use an old family surname but I would still use it in the MN spot.

I like Elizabeth enough. It has many nn options (Betty, Libby, Elsie, Eliza, ect.)

  • Like others have said, I couldn't fault it if it were a family name (even though I don't like it) but since its not, it's a weird thing to name a little girl - or a boy for that matter.

Anybody else think of "Collins will recount his exploits as 'anarchist' including the tale of his successful reprogramming of the MIT virtual reality equipment to self destruct as it broadcast the words - Actual Reality, Act Up, Fight AIDS!" from Rent?

I agree.  Since Collins and Smith run together your future LO may be confused for a boy named Collin all the time. I think there are a lot of unique and feminine names out there for you to use with the LN Smith.

  • I'm pretty sure there's a textbook here in Canada called Collins Smith.  That's what I think of.
  • I'm probably the only one but I actually like Collins for a girl and Emerson for a girl too. Collins is on our list, Emerson used to be but I'm not a fan of nicknames so I took off because I'm sure people would shorten it to emmy, em, etc..
  • It's bizarre. Please, please no.

  • I think it's awful for a boy but horrible for a girl. I would pick a girl's name.
  • I think of it as a last name. And since it has no family relation for you that seems even stranger. Also, Collin is a boys name. I can't stand this fad of saddling little girls with men's names.
  • Personally, I love Collins....We too have chosen a Sur name for our girl, Rossi. Collins sounds classic and I don't think you need any ties to a name if it is what you and hubby like.

  • I kind of like it!

  • Eh. I get the appeal for some people, especially after that football move came out but I personally just do not think it is a pretty name at all. I get if you have a gorgeous beauty queen of a dd, then that's great and all, but what if you don't (despite that she will be gorgeous beauty queen to you, always, but let's face it, no one thinks our kids are as beautiful as we do :) )
  • My name is Nicole and I can't think of anyone who calls me that. Its usally Nic and a long time ago my mother called me Nicholas with a few Nikki here and there. At work I am called by my last name, which is the normal for my type of job.Good thing we have a long way to go.

  • I've known a couple of girls named Collins, but it was a family name for both of them. I would seriously sideeye someone who used it with no family connection.
  • I like it!
