I've been having very painful back and abdominal pain every night for the last three nights (NEVER during the day). I went to the hospital night before last because the dr told me to. I was checked and was told I'm 70% effaced and 1 cm dilated. Today I had about a teaspoon of thick, dark brown discharge for the first time ever. Baby has dropped and I've been told she may be early for awhile now.
What I want to know is HOW LONG is this going to take? Is this pre-labor? And if so, how long can it go on for and how can I speed this process up?

And even then, you could walk around at 5cm dilated for weeks without going into labor. Simply being dilated/effaced isn't an indication that labor is on the immediate horizon.

I think that's PP point. There aren't really "tips", the baby will come when she's ready to come. You still have nearly three weeks until your due date...chill. The more time she has inside, the better, generally.
I know how you feel, I wish there was a sure sign! I've been dilated since 36 weeks and at my last appointment was 3 cms, 85% effaced, baby was at +1. A week later I'm 3 days past my due date, super uncomfortable and still no baby
Hang in there, she will arrive soon enough!

I have been having the same thing the past 3 nights, I am so glad you asked this!!
Although I have yet to lose my mucous plug.
I went into flase labor with DD at 36 weeks went to the hospital and dialated all the way to 5 and then it just stopped. Everything came to a hault and since I was no far enough along they sent me home. I felt half open to the WORLD!!! Finally my water broke at 37w3d. Trust me it will happen whenever that LO wants to show its precious little face.
I was 80% and 3cm at 35 weeks with my son and still was induced (walked into the hospital at 5-6, 90%) at 39w4d for other factors. Nobody can tell you how long you will walk around dilated/effaced. My MFM (high risk OB) thought I wouldn't get much past 37 weeks... he was wrong. I have no idea how long it would have taken to go into labor on my own had I not been induced.
That being said, I never had any bleeding. The bloody show might be more indicative of labor than 1cm dilated.
Considering you are only 37w4d, I will cross my fingers you can hang on another week or two. These last weeks are important. (My DD was a 35 weeker and the difference in the first month with her vs. my son is night and day...)

Um no. You are 37 weeks. A few days ago, had you given birth, your baby would have technically been a preemie. Your body is in no way, shape, or form "slow". It is doing what it should be doing.
Stop trying to push this. You shouldn't be asking for "tips" on how to get labor going right now.

"The bloody show" otherwise known as the loss of your mucus plug, which I have already mentioned has happened.
Not only are you completely offensive and RUDE, but you're wrong. Medically speaking a baby is full term at 37 weeks. That's what every doctor and nurse I have spoken to have said, every pediatrician and every book. 40 weeks is what used to be considered full term, it isn't any longer. Babies are premature 35 weeks and earlier only.
