TTC after 35

Finally - things are looking up..

My mom's surgery is scheduled for Sept. 25 - my birthday and I will be flying out the weekend before - they will be doing a less invasive procedure than originally scheduled - I will be out there for a couple of weeks during her recovery.

My new RE has been wonderful so far knowing that we are trying to get an IVF cycle in before the end of the year.  We did the phone consult with him and I explained that my mom had cancer and I was flying out but we wanted to move on with our cycle.  He spent extra time on the phone with us - was able to get my U/S and B/W appt in before I leave - the appt is on Saturday morning and I fly out Saturday afternoon.  He made phone appts for me with the financial and nurse coordinator.  I also have some genetic bloodwork that needs to be sent to Chicago for testing and he managed to get me in for that too - little nervous about these results the tests are really expensive and my previous RE never thought about doing them - hoping they come back okay.  I already have my BCP's and he said we should be able to start the cycle in October.  Our RE wants us this cycle to do the ERin October but not do the transfer and do a FET in November that way he can control the embryos.  He did say that if the embryos didn't look good we could still do a fresh cycle.   I'm nervous that an FET won't be as successful as a fresh cycle.  He uses a vetrification process and has said that their FET have better results than a Fresh cycle - can that be possible? I would love it if any of you IVF ladies had experience with this could chime in?  Sorry this was so long but wanted to share my good news...I finally feel like I'm moving forward and have hope :)

  • That's great that your mom is having a less invasive procedure, I pray everything goes well and she has a speedy recovery.

I don't have any experience with FET's, but there are many ladies I've seen who had BFN's on their fresh cycle, but got a BFP from their FET so it definitely can work.  Sounds like your RE knows what he's doing and has a good plan for you.  Good luck in October!

Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

  • Glad to hear your mom is doing ok and will have an easier surgery.

That is great that your RE is working around a tight schedule etc. As for the FET, some ladies have better luck doing the FET than a fresh transfer as the uterine environment can be a little rough for an embryo with all the drugs floating around. Once things calm down for a later transfer, it can mimic more of a natural environment. I think the ladies that get a ton of eggs are more at risk for a fresh transfer not being ideal though.  For you, I would be concerned about not having anything to freeze if they all arrest before day5 (I hope they are trying to grow them to blast and not freezing on day 3). But after all my cycles, I would rather not have a transfer due to no embryos to see what they look like on day 5. Hoping you get more embryos this time!! GL:-)

  • Thank you ladies for all your thoughts and prayers - last week was a difficult week but you all made it easier to deal with.

McIrish - Your concerns you metioned in your post mirror my concerns about not having enough embryos and even making it to 5DT, when we barely made it to a 2DT.  My RE says that if it doesn't look good we will plan for a fresh cycle - but if everything is looking well - he will try for a FET.  I'm curious to see what my AFC is with him - previous RE said I had an 18 AFC but he doesn't think that sounds right to only get a few eggs.  I do know I was on long Lupron and now he will be trying antagonistic approach - I was also on a very low does of stims 150 of gonal and menopur, new RE thinks it should have been higher.  I appreciate any advice or thoughts you can give me - I'm still fairly new to this process and trying to research as much as I can - it's becoming a full-time job ;)

I agree 100% that if you have an AFC of 18, you should get way more eggs that you did.  The protocol difference can  make all the difference in the world. As for the dosage, most REs would definitely give you higher stims. If you were DOR, I can see why you'd get  a smaller dose as it can be better for the quality of the eggs, But your numbers don't indicate you to be DOR. You can still be a poor responder but you'd need to do more cycles to see if that was the case. I've seen lots of women do much much better just with a different protocol. You were probably way too suppressed on the long lupron.

  • McIrish I agree I think the Lupron really messed this cycle up for me. I posted on the IF board that my RE wants me to do a set of immunology tests that are expensive and I'm not sure are necessary yet didn't get much feedback and would love your thoughts on this subject. My gut tells me to go through another cycle before doing this testing.

I never did any immune testing since I never had an embryo that I felt was capable to implanting.  If I had good looking embryos that were not implanting or were giving me c/p and/or mc, I would have considered it. But I personally would not spend the money after one IVF where you did a 2dt of 1 embryo that really didn't have much of a chance of being viable. Just my 2cents.
