Food Allergy

Hello and a question

Hello! Popping over from the February 2012 board to say hello and ask a question.  A little back history-DS has reflux and is on Zantac 2x/day, 2 mL at at time.  He was EBF up until around 6 months when we started giving solids.  He has not seemed to tolerate dairy in any form in my diet.  He cries and it seems to make his reflux worse. So I cut dairy from my diet when he was 2 weeks old.  I eat it occasionally to see if he responds the same-he does. Crying, horrible reflux, etc.

Since starting solids, he has also shown more tendencies toward food allergies/intolerance.  Specifically, every time I give him oatmeal, no matter how much he pukes for about 2 hours about 2-3 hours after he has it.   This has also happened with sweet potatoes 2 times, which I thought was odd.   In addition to the puking, he gets very warm, clamy, and lethargic. I have never seen him struggle to breath when this happens.

I have talked to his Dr. about this, but he is convinced he is over eating and I am over feeding him. Today for example he had maybe .5 oz. of oatmeal and 3 hours later he is puking.  What should the logical next step be for DS? Should I just wait longer to introduce any types of grains? Should I push to have DS tested for food allergies? Not sure what is the next step and what should be done!  TIA.

(I apologize if my terminology isn't 100%, allergies are very new to me)

Re: Hello and a question

  • Not sure about the next step but I just wanted to mention to make sure the oatmeal is dairy free. Beech nut and Earth's Best are the only 2 on the market right now.

  • I believe it was Earth's Best! Thanks for the thought though, I should probably be more careful about other things I buy for dairy stuff too!

  • Look into FPIES. Sounds like that may be it.

THANK YOU! I am going to bring this up to his Dr. at our next appointment! Everything I read so far sounds just like what happens when DS eats these foods.

  • My son was actually just diagnosed with FPIES and this does sound very similar. We actually went to an allergist in our area who specializes in FPIES and was able to give us a lot of information as to what may cause our son to have the reactions.  So far for us it is formula, including hypoallergenic and soy, sweet potatoes and strawberries.  Squash, rice and oatmeal are things that she said that many FPIES kids are sensitive to.  Our pediatrician was able to recommend this specialist. The appointment was several hours but very helpful! Good Luck! I know that it is a hard thing to watch your little one go through.
