C-sections

planned CS

I had my first child as an emergency CS due to the cord wrapping around my daughter's neck. Everything went well and recovery was fine.

Now that I am pregnant again, my dr says I have to have another CS because I did the first time and I am overweight.

I am okay with that, but I really like my expected due date of 12/12/12.  My first child came almost 2 weeks after my expected due date. Can I insist that we schedule for that date rather than a week earlier?

Re: planned CS

  • You can definitely ask. You still might not get your perfect date though. I scheduled mine twelve weeks out, and my doctor only had ONE time slot for the whole week to work me in. In the end there was really no choice to be made!  And in the overall scheme of things, it just wasn't worth worrying about.

  • It never hurts to ask, but don't be disappointed if they have to schedule you on another day.

  • Usually they want you to schedule it exactly at 39 weeks. I wanted to wait as close to 40 weeks as possible and my OB was ok with that. Most OBs only have certain days that they are operating so you will need to see if they are even scheduling anything for that day.

  • You can always ask but as PP said, it depends on the availability of the OR and your dr's availability.  I was given a choice of times on a certain day....but DS decided to show up early so another dr performed the c-section (my OB actually didnt get to deliver my DD either as she was early as well)

  • I wasn't given any option with my scheduled c-section, they handed me a post-it with the date and time on it and that was the discussion.

  • When I scheduled mine at 28wks I was the first on the list for that day so it also depends on how busy the doc/practice is too. When we sat down to have the discussion he asked me if that day was ok and then dialed up to OR right there in front of me and scheduled it. I was super stoked b/c my EDD was 10/18 and it was scheduled for 39wks so c/s is sched for 10/11/12!!

  • Just a few things first you do not have to have an RCS. If you choose to explore VBAC I am sure you can find an office around you willing to do it. With that said I was totally ok with a RCS too so I understand that :)

Second I don't think they can make you go 1 week early I think it is just suggested. I would just tell them the date you want and see what they say. However you may want to look into emeregency csection vs scheduled csection. They schedule 1 week early to avoid the complications that can come with a Csection of an already in labor mama.

Just b/c you were 2 weeks late first time doesn't mean you will be again. Lay all the cards out on the table with your OB at your next appt and talk it out with him.

  • Definitely never hurts to ask, but most DR's only do scheduled C Sections on certain days of the week. Hope you get what you're wanting.
