Preemies

Preemie diapers/ clothes? What did you use?

Hi ladies.  I am pregnant with triplets and am trying to plan for their needs, and would appreciate your insight. My MFM will not let me go past 35 weeks with 3, and I just have no idea how long they'll need preemie stuff, if at all. Obviously I don't have a crystal ball and there's a good chance they'll come earlier than the 35 weeks- that would be our best case scenario.

At what GA did you start to use preemie clothes/ diapers?  What did you need to provide vs. what the NICU provided?  At what GA did they outgrow the preemie diapers/ clothes?  Any other special items I should plan for?  Thank you so much for your help!

  • Congratulations on your triplets!  Very exciting!
My DS was born at 31 wks and spent 44 days in the NICU.  Honestly, with the life critical things going on, I didn't think for 1 second about how I was going to diaper.  And, had I, I really don't believe that my NICU would have given me the option to CD. They were very particular about how things were done (all with good reason, of course!).  At the end of those 7wks, DS was fitting into Pamper's NB size and they sent me off home with 1-2 packs.  While in the NICU, the hospital provided everything that DS needed.  I did bring my boppy to help while holding him.
Plan on spending a lot of time on this board.  The ladies are awesome and you'll get a good idea about what to expect.
    Good luck!

  • My LO was an IUGR preemie, so in addition to being born at 32 weeks, he was very small for his age (2 lbs. 9 oz. at birth).  The NICU will provide all diapers while they're there, so no need to worry about any of that stuff...I think our NICU had plain white shirts for him to wear if we wanted, but we chose to bring our own clothing in.  They allowed us to put clothes on him once his IV came out, which was at about a week old I think...he was still under 3 lbs. at that point and the preemie clothing was actually big on him!

He wore preemie clothing until he was about 5-6 pounds...he hit 5 lbs. right around his EDD at 2 months old.  At that time, I started phasing out the preemie clothing and getting into the newborn.  I know we came home using NB diapers, and he was about 4.5 lbs. then...they were a little big but not huge.

I hope that helps!  Good luck and hope your LOs stay in as long as possible!

  • As the other ladies have said, the NICU will provide diapers and things so I wouldn't buy anything until closer to your LOs discharge date.  They will also provide clothing (the NICU my DD is at has cute clothes that were donated but we also brought in some of our own outfits).  I wouldn't buy too many (but let family members if they want to!) because they will probably outgrow them when they are about 5 lbs.  My LO is 3.5 lbs and the preemie clothes are a little big on her right now.  Congrats on your triplets!!

  • DS was a 5lb0oz 36 weeker. He was in preemie diapers for about 2weeks and preemie clOthes a bit longer. Some clothes we bought at BRU and baby depot, others were gifted by family members from eversotiny.ca and vitamins. What we have is considered "NICU friendly."

DS 2 will likely be born earlier. We're recycling our old clothes and we got 2 new outfits from nurturebaby.com. Nicu friendly, again. We're waiting on buying diapers until we can bring him home. We have NB size, but we know for sure we'll use that!

  • When Julia was in NICU, I held up the pampers preemie right next to the pampers newborn, and I really couldn't tell a size difference.  I'd stick to newborn diapers.

Don't go crazy buying preemie clothes, but I bought some from carters online when they were on clearance and I knew I would likely have a preemie.  I got lots of outfits for about 5-7 bucks each.  they had a good clearance sale going on and preemies sizes are often the last to sell.

  • My LO was a 36-weeker.  She was 4lb 12oz when she came home and was in preemie clothes for about a month.  Her clothes were from Carters and BRU. You may be able to find some preemie clothes, onesies especially, on clearance with the end of the season coming up.

She could have fit into preemie diapers, but we always used newborn.  We just folded them down until they fit better.

Good luck and congrats on your triplets!
