PIP: (long!) Help decorating a playroom space!

Ok HGTVers and Pinners, I need your help!

Thinking about Christmas has me thinking about organizing our space a little better. LO's room is pretty filled with crib/glider/dresser/cube shelf, so while she plays in there a lot, her primary play space is our second living room. It's separated from our main living room by a look-through fireplace and non-fuctioning bar. You can see it from the front door, so we try to keep it fairly in control most of the time, but it really is the best space for us to dedicate mostly to her.

It is also DH's computer/desk space, and we won't want to get rid of that. That's one the main reasons it works, we can be on the computer with her playing out our feet and everyone is peaceful :)

We'll probably get her a wooden kitchen for christmas, and I'm thinking I'd like to do some kind of table and chairs for her to sit and color at as well. (or even something like this but short enough for her to sit at with a child's chair) Scrapbooking Space

Here is the room:

Wall 1 - Bar on the left. DH's computer desk (sans computer for the moment). Door is to the laundry room and then to garage (so its our primary in/out)shelves on the right are built in, currently holding baskets with random stuff, could definitely be changed up for toys and stuff).

Next wall:

Built in shelves, horrible couch that I'd be happy to get rid of. Would like to have some typeof adult seating in here, but maybe a big chair or 2 or a smaller loveseat or something? Bookshelf on the right can be moved to another room and replaced with something more kid's storage friendly? Behind the couch is an awesome window seat that I feel like has more potential than we are currently using it for!

 Next wall:

Door goes to the kitchen, and you can see the open edge of the room that leads to our foyer/front door on the right. Right now this is kind of a parking space for big toys.

Last wall:

This table is temporary (DH tore his knee and needed his computer set up where he could prop his leg up) Behind it is a raised hearth fireplace (short, only like 6-8" raised) The bar is on the right. Don't really want to bother ripping it out, but it's not functional, no plumbing going to it, but it does have a sink/faucet on one side.

Ok, if you made it through all that, hit me with all of your decorating genius! :) (and yes, I know first and foremost, we need to have those carpets cleaned!)

  • I really don't have any idea :- But I would get rid of the couch and that bookcase. Maybe get a chaise lounger to put angling where that bookcase is. Don't put anything in front of the window seat! Put some pillows on it and use it! I think your idea to get her a table and chairs is great.

After you  move the table out it will be very open and roomy so your DD will have lots of space to play. I would get a larger toybox or some sort of storage.

  • First of all, I would love to have one of these rooms!  So in my dream room, I would make DH's office near the bar/fireplace or closer to the area of the room you can see from the foyer (thinking maybe this area will stay neater with less toys).  Then I would set up an art/craft area with a table and chair set that your LO can be creative and do artwork.  Then I would set up a little reading area with a kid friendly book storage system (maybe one of those fabric book cases like this https://www.etsy.com/listing/108060243/fabric-book-slings?ref=sr_gallery_5&ga_search_query=fabric+bookshelf&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=ZZ&ga_min=0&ga_max=0&ga_ref=auto5&ga_search_type=all) and then get a love seat with a couple of chairs or even ottomans that you can use as ottomans or use as seating if you have more than a couple of people in the room.  My in-laws have a round coffee table that has 4 leather ottomans that push under it.  Really cool actually.  I would shop IKEA for really cool storage ideas.  I bought a paper roller and some paper from there to use in DD's room for doing art projects.  They also have really cool buckets that hang from a rod that you can store stuffed animals, art utensils, etc.  Post pics when it's all said and done so we can see the finished product!!

    what timing :)

FWIW, generally speaking, I would leave his desk where it is, but put an art/table area over in the corner-area between the fireplace and bar.  Replace the couch with a loveseat and maybe recliner... use the area between the 2 and window seat for a reading nook.  I'd put some cube shelves and the kitchen she's getting for Christmas against the wall by the kitchen door.  Big toys (ride on toy and BB Hoop) on the corners of the fireplace.  Is it possible to tear out the built in closer to the kitchen?  That might be too much effort, but that would open up some space.  The lower shelves on the other built in can be used for baskets of toys... blocks, cars, puzzles, etc.

For real opinions, I think I'd need to come over and sit and stare at your space a bit :).

  • I have no advice (our playroom is the room you walk into from the front door so we can't really make it fun) but your house looks really nice from the pics you showed.
