Another random cat question

So I have my H 80% convinced. In fact, yesterday he said, "I know we are getting a cat, because you always win" Muahahaha yes, H, I do indeed.

Anyway, how often do you change litter? Once a week? Do you change the whole thing out..like totally dump it and change it or what?

WAHHHOOOO new kitteh.

Re: Another random cat question

  • I have two Kitteh's. Fat Max and Charlie. Both girls.

I do a sweep of their litter everyday. Takes 30 seconds. Then I change the whole thing every 2ish weeks.

Im sooooo excited your getting a kitty! YAY!

  • I'm praying he doesn't flake on me again! Jerk. And thanks! That helps.

  • You'll want to do it everyday but it take like 10 sec to do. I have an automatic one and I really like it because he keeps the smell down and I just throw out what it clumps up every day or two and just add more litter in. It is really worth the money to me. My cat always thinks it is really cool when the litter box turns on, he has to go run down stairs to watch it pretty much every time. Also, you shouldn't change the litter whenever you get pregnant again. If I told dh that then I don't think we would have got the cat so I kept that knowledge to myself until after we got him, muhahaha.

  • Ya for cats!! H changes the litter, I stopped when I was pregnant and haven't started doing it again. Every 12 weeks we do a full dump.

  • We have a cat and he's a big fatty (about 19 lbs to be exact). DH usually has litter duty. Every few weeks we dump out all the litter and clean his box. His box gets scooped about every other day. DH was just commenting yesterday about how much hard work a cat is and honestly if I knew we would of had to get him declawed and groomed so often I probably wouldn't have gotten one.
  • We have two cats as you can see in my sig.  We have 3 litter boxes and they get cleaned twice a day.  Girl cat isn't so smart and won't cover her poop.  Boy cat is psychotic and takes Prozac and Valium (seriously) and we need to keep litters clean so he doesn't mark in the house.  I think DH changes them out completely maybe once a month?

My advice, get a girl cat since boys are more likely to mark and spray.

  • Males are less likely to spray if they are neutered at a young age. They are more likely to spray if they share the house with other animals. Every cat it's different though. My malecats have always been much more affectionate but females don't usually mark their territory. back to the original question I scoop every day, though sometimes I miss a day, and completely empty a bleach out the box about every month. Rinse well after bleaching though, the smell can put some cats off. DH refused to clean the box while I was pregnant and if the box isn't scooted at least every other day our female cat will refuse to use it. I cleaned it myself wearing gloves, making sure the room was well ventilated, and usually right before a shower and clean clothes. To say I was p!ssed at DH about the whole deal was an understatement....

  • OMG! I would be pissed.

Thanks for all the advice peeps!

I think this will be our new bff (if it actually happens this time): https://www.humanesocietyswm.org/adoption-cats.php
