Help!

I haven't been on the boards in a long while but I really need some new perspective and I always got help from this board in the past.

DD is 16 months old and every night and every nap-time since Thursday night she loses her s**t. I cant deal with it anymore and I am at a lose as to whats causing it or how to fix it.

By this I mean as soon as its time to go to sleep she is screaming and crying and pushing me away and fighting me in every way. DH too. We are both trying and totally lost.

Thursday she was fine up until she finished nursing, then all of a sudden the crying and screaming started. I tried holding her, rocking her, singing to her, talking to her, nursing again, nothing worked. I finally just sat up and pinned her to my chest until she fell asleep. She cried until she knocked out, and its been like this ever since.Tonight she flat out refused to nurse at all. She started the party as soon as she was out of the bath. This is a nightmare and I hate that I am starting to get mad at her for doing it

Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: Help!

  • Eleanor is having a hard time going to sleep too - I think part of it is the age.  She goes to sleep MUCH more easily for DH than me because with me she wants to keep nursing but she won't fall asleep nursing.  Right now I pretty much just lay her down on the bed and sit there - repeatedly laying her back down - until she falls asleep.  DH can just wrap her and she falls right to sleep.  Alas!

Is she getting teeth?  E is getting her last first molar - molars and canines are the worst for sleep disruptions.  Have you tried an earlier bedtime?  We always have more fighting if the kids are over tired.

Beyond that....I feel ya!  I just keep reminding myself it's a phase and must pass soon ;)

  • I'm not advocating CIO, but maybe she wants her space at bedtime? My little sister is 14years younger than me and I was built in babysitter lol. She did the same thing. I was literally restraining her in my arms to rock her to sleep. One night, we were doing the night time battle and I just put her in her crib. She cried for 5 minutes and just went to sleep and slept all night. She didn't want to be held to sleep anymore.

Besides that, maybe she's overtired? That always makes bedtime horrible in our house

  • Oh! Maybe a medical reason? Like ncbelle said, teeth? Ear infection?

I think its a combo of age and teeth. DD had gotten 12 teeth with no prob INCLUDING a set of molars but the canines have been horrible! Its been 3+ weeks and they are barely peeking thru but she is also doing the screaming thing to sleep and it starts at bath time half the time. Last night it took me over an hr to get her to go to sleep. Truthfully instead of getting frustrated i just turn over and pretend like im asleep and eventually she just gets tired and goes to bed. Hopefully this phase passes soon!

This is what I was thinking. My LO is already that way some nights, she doesn't want to nurse or snuggle, she just wants to be laid down and left alone.

  • It helps to hear that its a stage thing and not an "I'm a crappy mom or my kid is insane thing." I couldn't find anything on KellyMom or the Dr Sears site that was helpful.

Her lateral incisors (bottom) just showed up not long ago and her gums are still swollen so maybe the canines are not far off?

I will try an earlier bed time tonight too and see how that goes. I thought that might have been the problem on Thursday since she had fallen asleep in the car and woke up on the way to bed. But after it continued I was stumped.

Last night I seriously considered CIO . Never would have done that with my son but every baby is different and I thought maybe its what she needed but DH stayed with her and rubbed her back until she was out.

Thank you for the responses ladies, and I will keep reminding myself that it isn't going to last forever

DD was getting incisors and the canines at the same time...for some reason she has always gotten 4 teeth at once...anyway it does help to tell yourself its a stage and will pass. Hopefully soon. lol Last night She randomly woke up crying at 1am and pulling at her mouth and it took an hr&a half to put her back to sleep...im exhausted!GL!
