Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Quick Sleep Question..(too much?)

I'm almost exclusively on the special needs board now but I wanted to hop over and ask a quick question.  Morgan has had her fair share of sleep problems, but does anyone else's 18 month old sleep this much?

"normal" sleep would be 7pm-10am with a 2 hour nap.  But today she slept 7pm-11am, and still took a nap.  It just seems like A LOT.  Yes i'm thankful she's sleeping and i'm sorry if your child isn't (but we've previously had nights where she didn't go to sleep until 6am, so don't hate me lol)

I'm just worried it could be medically related and wanted to see what you guys thought before I bugged our doctors.

Thanks so much!

Re: Quick Sleep Question..(too much?)

  • That does seem like a lot.  17 hours or so, right?  I'm pretty sure the "norm" for 18 months old is 12-15 hours (including naps).  I don't know if it's a problem, but I'd probably mention it to the pedi just for my own peace of mind.

I hope it's nothing other than her being a sleepyhead!  Good luck.

  • Way more than average which is 12 according to Ferber with variations on either side to account for individual sleep requirements. I would be checking in with the pediatrician. I hope that it isn't anything serious.

  • I would ask the pediatrician for sure. It may be normal for her, but it's unusual enough to make a note of it.

You might also check weissbluth. His "averages" are often a little higher than ferber. I tried pulling up a graph on my kindle app and it looked like the upper end was about 15-16 hours a day total.

  • That seems extremely high to me, but that doesn't mean it's a problem. I'd check with her pediatrician, though

  • Worth having a convo with the pedi over, but I wouldn't be overly concerned.

  • My DD sometimes sleeps that much, usually about once a week.  Most of the time she goes down around 7pm and sleeps until 9am, then takes a 2-3 hour nap.  I agree with PPs - if you are having any reservations about it then it doesn't hurt to bring it up with the pedi.
