If your toddler self weaned...

How and when did they do it? I think my DD may be weaning and it's very bittersweet. She has been home with me for the summer and nursed for naps and bed but I went back to work this week and she went to a new daycare. She's asked to nurse a couple of times but it's almost like she doesn't know how...she'll put her mouth on and then look and laugh or she'll bite a little and then move away. If your toddler self weaned...does this sound familiar?

  • DS was 22 months.  About a month before he weaned he showed no interest in nursing and didnt ask.  I pumped for a week, because it was really "quick" in him stopping.  He resumed nursing a few times a day after that for a few weeks and then fully weaned.  It was much more difficult for me than him!

  • That sounds similar to how DD1 behaved when DD2 was born. She suddenly wanted to nurse again (having weaned around 3 mths earlier) but she didn't really know what to do.

DD1 self-weaned, and our morning nursing session was the last to go. She was half-hearted about for 2 or 3 days, and one morning I pulled my top up for her, and she just pulled it back down and gave me a snuggle.

She did nurse a couple of times maybe a month later, but that was because we travelled overseas, and she was beside herself with tiredness and desperate to get to sleep any way she could when she woke at around 4am. It was pure comfort for her. I was sad to see her so tired and unhappy, but secretly glad to just have those last couple of nursing sessions.

  • I had to initiate weaning with DD1 because her latch was so bad. She would dig her top teeth into me and leave marks every time. She was 34 months I think when we started weaning, and it took 4 months to wean 3 nursing sessions. It was very gradual; I stopped offering, and she eventually stopped asking.

I don't think it sounds like your DD is weaning. It's too sudden, and it's tied to a new event (you going back to work). I'd probably consider it more of a nursing strike and keep offering, especially because she's so young.

  • At about 15 months James stopped wanting to nurse much. Eli would want to nurse so James would see him and come over too but then he would suck for about 5 seconds and get down and Eli would continue nursing. His last nursing session was couple months before Eli's. I ended up weaning Eli at about 17 months but by that time it didn't seem like a big deal as we were only nursing once or twice a day anyway.

  • DS1 slowly dropped sessions during the day until the only day session was before bed at about 18 months. He was still nursing at 45am.

At 20 months, his only session was at 5am and I was tired of it. I started my period back and my nips killed me when I was ovulating. So I started rocking him instead of nursing him. It took 3 nights
