Cleaning baby's bottom

Ok so this may be a really dumb question, but are there any tips to cleaning a poopy bum when there is diaper rash involved? The nurse I spoke with said to use water and a wash cloth instead of wipes. If I did this I see a big watery mess so I guess I need help understanding what she is saying. Water, wash cloth, wipe bottom, pat dry with a towel? I also dont have an over abundance of wash cloths so is it alright to rinse it well after each diaper change and let it air dry or is that just gross and unsanitary?

Thanks for any help! I'm freakin out here cuz DH is at work, LO has the rash, I'm trying to figure how to do diaper changes now, and I have 2 cats and 2 dogs all looking for their dinner right now. Eek!

Re: Cleaning baby's bottom

  • Get some of the very soft paper towels (I think we used Viva) and a spray bottle.  Put some paper towels under LO's bum and spray with a little water and then wet the paper towels and blot rather than rub.  Make sure you let LO's bottom dry completely before putting on a new diaper.  If the rash keeps up go out tomorrow and get some Aveeno oatmeal bath.  It really does work.  (FYI, the baby and "regular" oatmeal bath are exactly the same but as a marketing gimmick, the one labeled for babies costs more).

  • Something to look into online...plain cloth.  Yes, you can use a washcloth but if you want something disposable to make it easier, You can get them on Amazon.  Something like the below works.  All you have to do is wet it.  Since it is very absorbent the cloth will stay wet but not be drippy if you squeeze it lightly.

  • When my LO poops I wash him under the faucet. How you ask? I hold him with one hand and I wash with the other. Wipes, at least for my LO, are irritating. Is it messy? Yea. But I rather a mess than wipe his bottom with wipes. He stays nice and refreshed after his poops and NO RASH. I don't use diaper rash cream b/c I wash him as soon as he's done pooping and he doesn't get irritated. You don't need wash cloths to do this either. Just two hands, water and a mild soap.

I do use the Pampers sensitive wipes but only when he pees.

  • Thanks for the tips! I'm gonna try a couple things and see what works best. I have a spray bottle and a wash bottle already so I'm gonna give those a try.

Thanks again! Any other tips are still appreciated Smile

THIS exactly.  My LO had a rash shortly after we switched diapers when we got home.  Dr. suggested the above and about 10-15mins air time.  Within a few days it was gone. We do use Burt's Bee's multi ointment as a protective barrier however..

  • My DS had a really bad diaper rash. We use wet paper towels on his bottom and then my pedi said to use a hair dryer on a cool setting to help dry his bottom, then we used triple paste on him. It took a while, but his bottom is finally getting better. I also changed his diaper alot because he poops so much, I try not to let him sit in it for long.
