When can I have sex again?

I'm 22 days postpartum, when can I have sex again? How long did you wait?

  • What does your OB say?

  • I don't have an OB there aren't any in the small town where I live. I see a Family Doctor, she asked what we were going to use for contraception yesterday so I assumed it was the green light.

I was juts curious what others did.

Then it's best you ask the doctor who attended your birth and knows you.

My OB said to wait 6 weeks.

  • I was told to wait at least 6 weeks after both births.  At my 6w checkup, my doctor gave me the green light as long as I felt up to it.

  • I was told six weeks, too.

  • Six weeks is standard so your uterus has time to heal.  I think DH and I waited 4 or 5 weeks.  I did want DH to wear condoms the first few times just to keep that area as clean as possible.  There's a higher risk of infection before the uterus is healed.

  • Don't you have discharge paperwork? They mostly say, "Nothing in the vagina for six weeks."

The recommendation has nothing to do with how you delivered, btw, it has to do with the fact that there is a large open wound in your uterus where the placenta detached. Sex invites bacteria and infection of the uterus. Personally, I wouldn't chance it before the six week recommendation.

Ohhhh! This whole time, I've been wondering why I couldn't use tampons for 6 weeks after a c-section. This makes total sense! Thanks for sharing!

  • I got the green light at my 4 week appointment. Gave it a try and gave up with in seconds. Don't think I'll be trying again any time soon.

  • Whenever your OB gives you the go-ahead, which is normally around 6 weeks post-partum because that is the time it takes for the wound from the placenta to heal, and until then there is a chance for infection, which is why there is no sex in the meantime.

For me, because I had both an episiotomy and a c-section, my OB gave me clearance at 8 weeks, but we waited until 10 because I just wasn't ready.
