How do I get urine out of my mattress?

I'm so annoyed, we have one of those $100+ waterproof mattress pads that we purchased with our mattress and it has totally failed. My 2 year old leaked through the other night and I've been using Biokleen Bac Out on it, dousing it over and over. I had high hopes for it because it seemed like some type of reaction was happening with this Enzyme cleanser which seemed to be what most sites I googled recommended. Upon spraying the Bac Out on the spot the urine smell became extremely intense. I thought it was disgusting but it seemed like something must be happening to cause such a reaction. I've saturated the spot over and over, perhaps 4-5 times and it still smells though the visible stain is virtually gone.

Has anyone used the vinager & baking soda method or have another tried and true remedy? I'm terrified of having to sleep on a mattress that smells like vinager so I'm leary to try the vinager. I'm taking out the Sharc steam Mop in a few mintutes to see if that helps at all. I'm desperate!

The mattress pad is supposed to have a warranty that states they will replace our mattress if it fails but in the mean time I need to be able to sleep on it.

  • I did vinegar and baking soda on my couch cushion after a potty training accident. It took the urine smell our and did not leave a vinegar smell.

  • Just plain white vinager? If so yahoo, I'm off to douse the mattress once again!! :)

  • I've used vinegar and warm water after my "precious" cat peed on my bed. Apparently cats do not appreciate being dressed up as Santa Claus.

It smells until it is completely dry but after that you can't smell it at all.  Be liberal.  It takes a while to dry but in my experience, it's worth it.

  • I've had a few of these on my mattress when my son was napping in our bed. I just covered the area completely in baking soda and let it sit for an hour, then vacuum it up and repeat. I did it three times and applied some pressure to get the baking soda down into the mattress to absorb it. Then I left sheets off it for about 48 hours so it could dry. I've never had any issues with smell, however there is a slight stain there that just looks like a watermark. I put a antibac matress pad over it. I'd rather not use any sort of chemical on something we'll be sleeping on so I'll live with a stain. I bought the $10 and $20 mattress pads from amazon for DSs bed and so far they work great, so you might give those a try.
  •  2-step, totally going to try the vinager/baking soda method but don't hesitate to Check out the Enzyme Cleaners for your stain. They're often organic and all natural made from fruit rinds, you can even make your own. No more stain and no chemicals. I'll admit, I didn't check the BioKleen brand in particular but I did find it in the natural products section at our local store and that brand is known for their natural and organic cleansers so hopefully there's nothing yucky in it but when I was online, there were tons of organic and all natural brands and as I mentioned above, there was even a recipe for making your own.
  • I've also covered the spot in baking soda (after blotting out as much urine as I can get), let it sit for a few hours then vacuumed it off.

    This, entirely.
