Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Teeth? sick? any thoughts??

My son is 15 months. This week he has just not been himself. He was tugging on his ears in the beginning of the week, but not anymore. He has had a fever right around a 102. Hasnt been eating or drinking much at all. I have been giving him pedilyte. To keep him from being dehydrated. He has had loose stool. and has been soooo cranky. He will not sleep by himself only on top of someone. I thought maybe it was an ear infection. Now im thinking maybe its his teeth. He hasnt been coughing or sneezing or had a running nose or anything. So now im getting really concerned. Anyone have any ideas?

I made a doctors appt. but im still so scared.

  • My daughter went through this when she got her first set of molars. She's going through it again right now. It's hard to know if it's teething or something else, though. I made an appointment last time but have waited to this time. I think it's always a good idea to see the dr just to rule out infection.

  • This sounds pretty much what we went through with molars.  my son was  a great teether, till the molars.

His fevers were also only at night and they would spike really really high.

I agree with this. At our 1 year appt. the Pedi mentioned that molars coming in very often mimick ear infection symptoms.  When in doubt, I always so go to the Dr.  If the fever and fussiness is worse at night, then I would guess it's teeth, but you never know,  If it is molars, it will be a few days of misery for your LO.  Good luck.

  • Yea he has been great with all his other teeth. I think its teeth too. but my MIL insists that i take him to the doctor. So we will see what happens. fingers crossed that its nothing serious
  • Same as previous posters have said, this sounds exactly like my son now who is 17 months and cutting 4 molars at the same time.  He is just not himself, so cranky all the time, and runs fevers and tugs at his ears periodically.  We have been getting through it with frozen teething rings and motrin/tylenol.

  • Rule of thumb: if the fever does not go down with Tylenol and/or the child is not DRINKING (not eating for a bit is OK), call your doc.
