Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Will NOT eat..

Hi all.  I was hoping maybe some of you could offer advice (or sympathy? haha).

DS is 15 months old.  Way back when we started purees and he was a CHAMP.  Never had a problem.  Unfortunately "real" food has not been so great.  Supposedly at daycare he eats everything but at home he will NOT!  He'll let me spoon feed him yogurt but 80-90% of the time he won't eat any food I put on his tray.  No to chicken, fruit, veggies, sandwich, etc.

For a while there he was eating pizza and pepperoni roll (I know, super healthy, but I was desperate).  But tonight he wouldn't even touch the pepperoni roll!

I caved last night and fed him veggie puree to get something in him.

I'm at a loss.  I know they say kids won't starve but I'm seriously worried from a nutrition standpoint. I can't in good conscience let him live on cheerios, puffs Goldfish and Ritz crackers!

  • My motto is that as long as LO gets one good balanced meal a day (in your case, at daycare), then i'd try to supplement elsewhere. I have snuck in veggie purees in pancakes, muffins...etc and thank god there are multi vitamins lol

It's a phase they go through and hopefully grow out of it - i'm still struggling with my 20mo old...but he is getting better

  • My niece is this way and she'll be 2 in October.  My SIL is still giving her purees.  Only recently has she started eating some solid foods, at which she will at least put them in her mouth, mash them up a bit and spit them out!  As long as you're giving her a good balance.  I would say stick with the purees and less peperoni rolls!  LO will get the hang of it, won't eat purees forever.  Also, are you still giving milk, if so, how much.  My LO has been eating SO much more since I have significantly reduced her milk intake.  Good luck and hang in there.  Just remember to keep offering, no matter what.  Twice the work, but LO will get it eventually.

  • Hopefully it's just a phase.  We had a solid strike when DS was getting his mollars in aroun 14-15 months, it just hurt him too much.

Being concerned about his nutritional intake I went back to making purress and giving him tiny pieces of other food.  We taught him to take his other food and dip it inot the puree.... and he started moving back to more solids.  We still make purees and he eats them in addition to his meal.

Try making some soup... my little one will eat soup with pieces of veggies and meats in there even through his strikes

  • We have had the same problem for a couple months and it seemed like he wasn't eating anything.  He is getting a little better, but I still supplement in purees so he will get some protein, etc.  I just keep offering and try to not make a fight of it or get frustrated.  Some days he does okay and others he doesn't touch a thing.  Just keep trying!  Also, I did some research and they don't need as much now that they are toddlers so that made me feel a little better too...I think it is 1000 cal/day and that it is typical for them to not hit that daily.  Good luck and now I have a pregnancy craving for pizza!

  • We don't have that much of a variety here either, but DD hated purees so we are better now.  She will eat a banana and waffle/pancake for breakfast and yogurt and any fruit for lunch but we literally alternate between eggs, turkey hotdogs, grill cheese, and raviolis for dinner.  I literally sneak veggies in the grill cheese by spreading pureed sweet potato or squash on before the cheese.  I recently purchased Jessica Seinfeld's book on sneaking veggies in and plan on trying some of her recipes.  Oh, and a friend recommended tofu??  Haven't tried it yet.  Good luck.
