"True Life" show on Infertility?...

Did anyone else see this?  I'm not sure how I feel about it.

From Resolve's FB:
"MEDIA ALERT: MTV is doing a ?True Life? show on infertility. RESOLVE staff recently spoke to the producers, discussed their approach, and advised on how to address infertility. Now MTV is looking for people to share their stories. Have you always wanted to have a baby and are finding out that getting pregnant isn't as easy as it seems? Do you plan to seek help from a fertility clinic? Has trying to have a baby left you emotionally, physically, and financially drained? If you want to share your story, are age 18-29, are currently struggling with fertility issues, please email your name, story, location, PHONE NUMBER, and photograph if possible to MTVInfertile@mtv.com"

  • TV producers seem to be making money off every other tragic life situation, so why not ours as well.  I have a horrible feeling it's just going to portray the infertiles as pathetic and emotional...I can't see this being good.

And what are they going to do when everyone doesn't have a happy ending?  Does MTV think that if they follow everyone long enough, all of the women will end up pregnant for a happy MTV ending?  Do you just get kicked off when it takes four or five years?  But, I'm sure I'll watch it anyway.

Well, now that I am 30 I am clearly too old for reality tv. That year really dampens the relate-ability to the teenagers who watch this and have no problem getting pregnant.

  • I don't understand how you can have a True Life about IF, and have it capped at 29.  Honestly-how many 18 year olds deal with IF?  So they've been "trying" to get pregnant since they were in high school?  I don't get it.

I thought the same thing about the age range.  I'm not sure about the age range on this board, but the few girls IRL I knew struggling with IF were in their late-20's and into their mid-30's.  Makes me wonder how the hell an 18-year old would be pursuing things like IVF!

I agree, and how would an 18 yr old afford ivf?  even if they had insurance coverage it would still be very expensive.

  • MTV is weird like that...I was on TRL once and they told me what to say...so scripted, then I was going to be in the backround of a show, but they wanted me just in my bathing suit, no t shirt...I declined.

I wouldnt be surprised if all of these "true life" shows are embelished a bit....

It really bothers me that they are limiting this to 18-29 year olds. Not that there's anything wrong with those ages, and dealing with IF in your 20's has got to be just as hard. But, how about the struggle from those of us at an age that society "assumes" we should still be able to have kids (especially when everyone in Hollywood does it), but our bodies don't work! If you want to do the show right, don't limit the age! I was so surprised to find at 32 I had the ovaries of a 40 year old!

And I totally agree Bee...except I bet they'll show that one that gets KU after a month on clomid. ( Hi, by the way, we've missed you!)

  • I am going to take their show with a grain of salt. I will give it a shot and see what it shows. While I hate that it only shows 18-29, at least IF is getting out there. It does not surprise me it is coming from MTV....

  • We know the age limit is because they are trying to appeal to a young audience, but it definitely-surely gives a false sense of true infertility that affects women of all ages.

I obviously haven't seen this show so I shouldn't completely slam it before seeing it, buuuuut I have a pretty good feeling it will be a show of rainbows and butterflies and a happily ever afters (after two months of "IF").  I would be surprised if has any depth at all.

And...I would like to think it is good that IF is gettinge exposure, but please don't bother - if the info bias on many accounts.

  • The 18-29 really bothers me. How many 18, 19, 20 year olds are even thinking about building a family, let aline struggling with IF?!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Nice---because people over the age of 29 can't struggle with IF.

Or perhaps because their target audience isn't over the age of 30?

    Hmmm.

    Either way---I'm out.

I'm clearly---too old at 34 years of age.

Why? Because I remember MTV when they played music videos and there was only one MTV channel!
