Cloth Diapering

Ammonia after strip?

So I did an rlr strip last week for our super hard water and buildup. I have never has ammonia issues before and now we do. It's after she pees in a diaper and her poor bum is getting red so I've been using cjs as a barrier. We already keep the diaper pail open   Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Ammonia after strip?

  • I use 1/4 cup bleach in the wash cycle once a month and have not had ammonia issues since.

  • I do a warm pre wash with rng ammonia bouncer ( my local store recommended this a while ago as preventative) then a long hot wash with 2tbsp crunchy clean super blend then 2 extra rinses. I have a HEfront loader if that helps. I do manually add extra water to my wash cycle

  • Thanks! I wonder if my bag has the wrong instructions printed on it. It says 1-2tbsp for front loader. I'm using the hard water formula and adding straight water. I will up the amt and see what happens

  • Is it possible you didn't get all the RLR out after stripping? You might try soaking the clean diapers in hot water and doing a few hot washes to see if that helps.

  • I actually found RLR made my ammonia worse.

Lots of HOT rinses with no detergent is the stripping method that works best for me!
