Need help weaning

I am a stay-at-home who has breastfed my son to sleep for every nap and bedtime. I have to have my baby weaned by the end of the month because I'm leaving for 4 days on a girls trip and I also want to be done!  My son loves to be breastfed down to bed and naps.  How do I wean from this?  Everytime I try to put him down without breastfeeding him he cries bloody murder.  I have been trying to give him milk in a sippy and he will take a drink or two once in a while but doesn't really like milk. He has no problem drinking water.  He loves water.  Help...need your advice.  I just need him weaned without it being a huge battle.

Re: Need help weaning

  • Can you DH start putting him down at night before your trip and see how that works? If it is your DH putting him down instead of you, he might not flip out. And then when you go away on your girls trip, that is when the nap feeding can go away. I would normally say drop the nap one first, but I assume that there is no one else around to put him down. Good luck!

  • I  had DH put him to bed for nearly a week. The first night he screamed bloody murder - I wish I had been out of the house. The second night he cried, but it wasn't as bad. After that, he was pretty much fine. We switched to rocking (vs. putting him down alone) because I thought it was a slightly better transition - but obviously then you need to wean from rocking (which my son did on his own, thankfully).
  • I made a weaning schedule dropping a feeding a week. I started with the nap feelings, and ended with the first morning feeding. He did remarkably well, but I think he was ready to wean. It sounds like your LO may not be ready. Can you pump for the days you'll be away?
