I did the glucose test at my very first prenatal appointment (6 weeks, maybe) because of my advanced maternal age. I passed, but now I'm wondering if I'll have to take it again during the standard glucose test window later on.
I keep meaning to ask my midwife, but never seem to remember.
I wouldn't be surprised if it varies across docs/offices, but I'm curious to know what others' experiences have been.
Re: Glucose test question
I am shocked you did it so early, unless you have a history of GD or other obvious risk factors. I would expect that you would take it again during the normal window. Don't wait til your next appt to ask, call and ask, it only takes a second and you don't even necessarily need to speak to the mf about it, the nurse or receptionist may be able to answer or ask the MF and get back to you.
Wow, what?! I can't believe they had you do it that early. Are you sure it was the GD glucose test - did you have to drink a big bottle of sickeningly sweet fluid, then have your blood drawn after an hour? If so, that's crazy. I've never heard of it being done so early. Did they suspect you might be diabetic already?
Yes, I am sure they will want to do it again around 25-28 weeks, because that is usually when gestational diabetes rears its head.
Ha! I had no idea this wasn't a standard Advanced Maternal Age thing! I just assumed it was.
Technigirl - Yup, I'm sure it's what I did. They explained what it was, although I already knew with my previous pregnancy w/ my DD. It was like an extra sweet, flat Sprite. They took my blood an hour later and told me that if I hadn't heard from them in the next few days, then assumed I'd passed.
Maybe I'll give them a call and find out, although I'm fine waiting until my appt at 21 weeks. I was giving myself a pat on the back for being in the clear and then burst my own bubble when I realized I might have to do it again later on.
Thanks for the feedback, gals.

You probably have some risk factors that made you at higher risk to have GD.
