xp: Milk in sippy cup-help!

My daughter is almost 17 months.  She's been drinking water from a sippy cup since very early on-  and milk from her bottle.  All hell breaks loose anytime we offer her milk in a sippy cup instead of her bottle.  Just wanted to see if anyone had any insight/advice on how they did it successfully before I pull out all the stops and stick with a hardcore routine without caving into the tantrums.

Thanks!

  • We had to do the hardcore just stop and switch.  We were at a graduation reception in May and all I had was a sippy cup with a soft spout, so I gathered up some milk (it was getting late and it was still 45 minute to home) and she fought it for a bit and finally gave in.  There was no turning back after that point.  It was all sippys.  no bottles.  Good Luck.  Its hard but you can do it!

  • yeah, I think it's more mine and my husbands fault.  She gets plenty to eat for nutrition- I know the bottle is just mainly for comfort so I will just gather my patience and try to find something else to fill in the down/comfy time.

  • my advice

    Just Do It :)

Get rid of the bottles completely.  There is no easing into this transition.  Your there now.  Just get rid of them and give her the sippy.

There are other ways to get her the calcium during the transition if she refuses to drink her milk (yogurt, etc.)  Just make sure she is drinking fluids also.

  • My LO went through this too.

One day before we left on a road trip at naptime, I put milk in a sippy instead of a bottle. She had no choice but to figure it out. It took like 45 minutes, but she got it.

I will say though she will drink water out of any kind of sippy but only likes milk in the straw kind. That isn't a battle I choose to fight..I'm fine with it.

My LO still isn't the best milk drinker..she doesn't seem to like it. I don't fight it too hard either. She's a good eater otherwise, likes other dairy and drinks water like the well is going dry...so I'm fine with it.

  • Thanks Ladies,

I think it's time to rip off the band aid  :-)

  • We went cold turkey and took away all the bottles completely. So far it's been working for DS and he drinks his milk out of a sippy.

I can't recommend these enough!  We tried all kinds of cups before the lady in the store put me on to these.  Took one feeding of milk to get him to switch off the bottle to these.  They feel like a bottle, but have a sippy cup top. They also don't leak at all (bonus)!   I also recommend keeping the milk feeding routine the same as when you used bottles until the transistion is made.  For us, that meant cuddling in the easy chair and watching the Sunny Side Up Show right when we got up.

He didn't like it right at first, but after a minute or two, he was okay.
