New to The Bump

Hyperemesis gravidarum anyone? tell me I'm not the only one

Hi,

So I'm new to the bump and I came on for support.  I have Hyperemesis gravidarum, which is very rare but it's extreme cases of morning noon and night sickness.  I was very sick in the beginning when I found out I was pregnant and thought it was bearable and then by 8 weeks all hell broke lose.  To give you an idea, I can't keep water down let alone my prenatal vitamins.  I'm constantly nauseated and vomiting is pretty much constant.  I feel like I've ruined my throat from vomiting so much (lost weight and lot of blood when vomiting).  After going to the ER and complaining like crazy to my doctor they finally signed me up for IV fluids through a cancer center that way I didn't have to keep going into the ER.  The IV fluids haven't seemed to help or any of the anti-nausea meds they've given me.  At 12weeks (last week) I was able to get some food down which really helped, but it's like my entire GI track has stopped working.  And I still feel terrible....I haven't really left the house in weeks.  I try but even walking the dog slowly around the block is too much for me.  It's like I'm constantly trashed I'm so dizzy I feel I could faint at any minute. I'm worried for the baby I have not consumed the folic acid and Omega 3's and everything else I'm suppose to take.  I've lost weight and a lot of fluids but my doctors say the baby's doing just fine!  I'm also worried about my job.  My doctor put me on disability leave, which made me feel better that I won't lose my job, but I'm a new employee and I guess I just have fears of how it looks! (which I know doesn't really matter considering it's not like I could work like this and I did try which just made for a very dangerous work situation).

I realize I'm more or less venting here.  But I was wondering if anyone else has been through or is currently going through this.  It might give me some piece of mind knowing I'm not alone.   I'm pretty sure I've tried everything known to man for morning sickness, but if you have any suggestions I will take them!

  • Hi there!
I know exactly how you feel.. I suffered from HG with my 1st pregnancy and it was horrifying. I was literally in my room in bed with all the windows closed and isolated from everything. I couldn't even shower on my own. I quit my job when I was around 10 weeks.
To top it off I had excessive saliva which only made it so much worst.
I am now 7 weeks pregnant and going through the same road

Hang in there xoxo I know it's so hard :
HG ended in my 1st pregnancy when I was 25 weeks pregnant.

  • I had a horrible time with HG, my daughter was born in July so it's all very fresh in my mind.

My OB refused to believe that I was as sick as I was claiming to be (because I was never sick in his office). At first everyone around me said I was having regular old m/s (I did too) and that I needed to suck it up, until I needed to go in for fluids every week, and then 2x a week, and then every other day :(. I was first told to try taking vitamin B6 and Unisom cocktail, that did nothing but give me wonderful naps, the one time I wasn't plagued with nausea and/or vomiting. Then it was Phenergan, which did next to nothing, except give me okish naps but you can't spend all your time sleeping. Things weren't getting better and I was put on Zofran and it was awesome for about a week (btw the side effects from Zofran are terrible). I was eventually hospitalized, fortunately just for one night thanks to the wonder drug Reglan (which has some potential scary side effects). Reglan saw me through week 12-23 and then my HG went away, completely gone by week 25.

I found a lot of support at babycenter.com, they have a support group for  HG that thebump doesn't. I was seriously thinking about termination at a few points in my desire to spend less time feeling like crap (selfish I know, but it's really that bad sometimes). The women over there really helped me through those moments.

Some tips ... find what works for you!! I could eat some things some times (I could always eat ice cream, because it never bothered me to puke it back up). Ask your doc for anti-nausea meds asap! If your doc doesn't take your HG seriously (even if baby is doing fine) find another one, if possible. Don't worry if you can't take your pre-natals, Piper is just as smart and healthy as the next baby and I couldn't take pre-natals even after the HG was gone as they always made me puke.

I hope you find some relief soon!

  • If your doctor isn't taking you seriously, I would recommend finding a new one. You know your body better than anyone else and can feel when things aren't right. I had my first prenatal checkup with my doctor at 11 wks 6 days and she ended up sending me straight to the ER after talking to meand this was my first time to meet her. I started off with nausea which progressed to vomiting once or twice a week, then to every other day, then to every day. By the time I saw my doctor I couldn't even keep water down. I ended up hospitalized for 4 days and I'm now on nausea meds around the clock. Even with the meds I couldn't keep food or liquids down yesterday and I'm terrified I'm going to end up in the hospital again. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one going through this. I had lost 6 lbs when I checked in to the ER and I'm sure my weight has gone down more since. My ketones were in the highest possible range, which means your body has ran out of carbs to get energy from so it starts in on your fat stores basically your body goes into starvation mode. I'm so weak I run out of energy walking from my bedroom to the living room and I constantly feel like I'm going to faint. I can't even stand to take a showerI have to sit on the shower floor. I don't know how long this will last for me, but I hope not much longer. The good thing is I have a lot of support from my family and my doctor. If your doctor isn't giving you the help, support, and understanding you need deserve, kick him/her to the curb and find one who will!
  • Hey there,
I know exactly how you feel. :
I'm 11 weeks on HG pregnancy 3, this being the worst. I've been to the ER twice for fluids/meds and admitted to the hospital twice as well I'm still in as I write this. At my lowest I lost 21 pounds regained a couple with fluids.
I got on Promethazine via the ER and it worked for a few days then didn't even make me tired anymore. After the second ER visit I was finally able to see my OB she is new here and hadn't arrived yet. She got me on Zofran gen. Ondansetron after I had to be admitted due to sky high ketones and not even being able to walk on my own. When I got home four days later the Zofran worked for about four days before it too quit. I slowly went down hill until I made another appointment and got admitted again. Here I am still.
Zofran via IV was the first attempt and I feel like it does nothing. Then they tried Reglan which works for a little of the nausea and stomach acid build up. By itself it's not enough for me. So now I'm trying the Promethazine Suppositories at a 50 mg. dose and they work really well, but of course make me sleepy. Since my bowels have been really slow it's been a week since a normal BM, they do make me feel like I need to go pretty bad. Even with going to the bathroom after 1015 minutes, it still works. Doctor is serif about getting some Promethazine Cream compounded and I hope to get on that because I've read it doesn't cause so much drowsiness.
I have three children one who goes to kindergarten, so obviously can't sleep all day.
I wouldn't worry about your job, they can't fire you over being sick, especially when you have clear evidence of being really sick.
And if no one is taking you seriously, I agree with the above comments. Find someone who will! This is the first doctor out of my three pregnancies that is taking me seriously. I had to do my own research with my previous pregnancies and even then they still treated me like it was regular MS! Even after dropping 35 and 40 pounds and seriously looking like a Holocaust survivor. I still have the mad desire the choke people who tell me to just eat some crackers and drink Ginger Ale, and that they went through it too. : /
Even my family isn't taking me seriously. I stopped talking to my mother because she kept talking to me like its just regular MS, that I'm being whiney, and that she shouldn't have to "parent" my children because I won't do it! The odacidy!!
So seriously, drop anyone who won't take you seriously; the BEST thing you can do for your baby is have a doctor who recognizes this as something serious. And even anyone around you who treats you poorly over being sick, I'd ignore them for awhile too, because stressing out isn't good for baby either.
If you want to talk sometime just message me. I could use some friends who know how it is.
  • Hi teamelliot5, I was just wondering how things turned out and if you delivered your baby ok? I also had hg in my first pregnancy, but had to terminate at 16 weeks.  Am now planning my 2nd pregnancy and hope the experience will be different.

  • Wow!

I didn't mean to be so flaky.  I didn't realize people responded back!  Thank you all for your support and also just letting me know I wasn't the only one.  I'm happy to report back that there is light at the end of the tunnel!  I was due five days ago and we should meet our lil one any day now!  Although I still get sick, it's not as bad, or I'm used to it....I'm just thankful the pregnancy is almost over with.  I hope you all are doing well!
