Cute lunch check-in

I think I'm finally in the swing of full time lunch making for school. As DD is eating her after school snack, I cut up some extra fruit and plan out her lunch for the following day. Sometimes I'll even cut the bread and get out a bento box to start filling it. While I'm making dinner, I finish up the rest of her lunch and take a picture while it's still light out. Then everything goes into the fridge - even the lunch box. In the morning, I put an ice pack into her lunch box and send her off to school. That means these checkered apples really do last all that time without browning. I bought a container of fake lemon juice (you know, the little lemon-shaped container) and squeeze it into a ramekin full of water. It soaks while I make the rest of the lunch (use a spoon to keep it submerged).

"Who's been painting my roses red?" I am so proud of this lunch! DD just watched "Alice in Wonderland" for the first time and it occurred to me how easy it would be to make a themed lunch. So there's a ham and cheese-on-top sandwich with fruit strip details (though who ever heard of a 1 of hearts?). Checkered apple with a few hidden cherry tomatoes beneath it, blueberries on a crown pick, strawberry "rose" and pretzels. To make the strawberry, just put one small berry in the middle and arrange slices of another strawberry around it.

Ladybug! I went to a dollar store looking for fake flowers (flower shop sensory bin - so fun!). While there, I found little ladybug lidded containers. So that has a little Jello in it, plus a mini banana on the side. In the lunch is a ham and cheese-on-top sandwich cut with a biscuit cutter. The holes are made with a mini straw - the hole punches are the antennae. There's also carrots and cucumber, mini grapes and a few blueberries.

How colorful! On the left is an apple wedge (soaked in lemon water while I assembled the rest), pita strips, strawberries and a lidded container of hummus. On the right are cherry tomatoes, carrots, mini grapes and two cucumber wedges in the ear spots. The green pieces are silicone "baran" to keep wet/dry items separate and to keep everything in place.

FAIL. I was going for "drums" but the sandwiches just look like little circles with musical picks. The pretzels are "drumsticks," plus carrots and tomatoes in the top container. In the bottom are strawberries and blueberries. Oh well! DD was thrilled with the high proportion of strawberries in this meal.

Fish! This is sort of a weird container - it has a shallow top compartment that I sometimes leave out, but then the lid doesn't seal properly. So there are Goldfish up top, plus the end section with mini homemade sealed PB/honey sandwiches. In the main compartment are blueberries, cheese, tomatoes and a fish container filled with cut strawberries. Orange food in an orange container isn't very appealing to the eye!

Have a great week everyone and PIP your lunches here! I think pretty much everyone is back in school now, so send a little love in their lunchboxes!

  • Hope this works, I haven't put a picture on here in a long time.

For DS's first day he requested a sweet potato and black bean quesadilla. He also had peppers, cherry tomatoes, fruit cut into stars, and a box of raisins. In the small container there is applesauce and in the bag is pretzels and banana chips. He is into jokes so I added one, which he LOVED. I printed a whole bunch and will add one a week. He loved his lunch and I loved that with a little bit of effort it was a lot of fun!

    Thanks for always inspiring brightning!

  • Uh-oh! At my DD's school, they have to bring home any uneaten food. Makes it easy!
