I've never heard of one, but I'm pretty sure they didn't originate in China--lived there 2 years and never heard about a special kind of auction. I did find this article, but since it's a letter to the editor, I'm not sure if it's true.
We do a "random crap" gift exchange at Christmas (which is awesome fun), and we had occasionally called it a Chinese gift exchange, but now it's termed WHite Elephant?
