Ramen Noodle Alternative?

I'm CRAVING ramen noodles (I haven't eaten these things since college 10 years ago).     The best part is that I can tolerate eating them so it's food in my tummy.   The bad part is the sodium (830-OUCH).    Anyone know of a GOOD alternative that tastes/texture is close to the same?

Re: Ramen Noodle Alternative?

  • You could just do chicken noodle soup, or put some noodles in chicken broth, but I don't know that the sodium would be much better.

  • What about spaghetti noodles in chicken broth or something?

Also, re: the sodium, I am assuming that the sodium content is if you consume everything in the package (ie, eat the noodles AND drink all the broth that contains the entire spice packet)     ...I don't know about you but I eat the noodles and ditch the broth... which I am assuming, cuts down on the sodium content dramatically.

  • Good point.   I tend to be very sodium aware.    I'm a little more aware now because I figure the excess salt will eat the water outta my system and I'm struggling already to get enough in everyday.

As of now I do dump all the broth except maybe 2-3 tablespoons.   I did just have a good idea from you ladies.   I could still eat the actual ramen noodles with low sodium chicken broth.....maybe I'll try that tomorrow.

Oh and I've love to throw in some veggies but my body is on a strict no veggie intake kick.   I can't even cut DH a salad or I run away heaving.

  • When I make ramen I only put enough spice from the packet to have just enough flavor but not all the sodium. Also if you get the cup of soups there isn't as much in them. The ramen that I used to get which became my favorite actually had like 2,000 mg of MSG and that was horrible but it tasted sooo good. You can also look up ways to make MSG free ramen on your own.
  • And make sure you stay well hydrated and drink plenty of water. It will help keep you from getting a sodium overdose of sorts. It's not a bad thing to have the ramen every once in awhile as long as you have a well balanced diet.

I know what you mean. My first couple weeks I couldn't make scrambled eggs without the oil in the pan smelling like burning black licorice.
  • I'd just go for the Ramen, but use only half the flavor packet and eat just the noodles, not the broth. This will cut the sodium content by well over half.

Yup. this. Just use half the flavor packet and don't drink all the broth. I LOVE ramen, it's a comfort food for me, so sometimes I just feel like eating it. I don't freak out about the sodium, though, because it's only once in a while. Unless you were eating it 6 times a day, I don't think it's gonna make that big of a difference.

    OMG too many tickers...

  • you could also try adding your own seasonings in place of the packet!  That way you know what is going in.  There are alot of low-no sodium spices you could use depending on what flavors you are craving! Just a though, or maybe splash some low sodium chicken broth in with them for the flavor.  I also thought you might try and bouillion (sp???) cube if you were looking for other flavor other than chicken! good luck! LOVE ramen!

  • If your grocery store has an international section they usually sell the same type of noodles and you can just use low sodium chicken boullion or broth.  You could also use the noodles from the ramon noodles and just do the same... Thats what I do, use the noodles but a different form of flavoring.... it wont taste as salty yummniess but it should do the trick
