Postpartum Depression

PPD: Frustrated

I gave birth to our first child in May and have been feeling fine up until about 2 weeks ago. I am more tired, irretable, emotional etc. This came on rather suddenly and I have been feeling so overwhelemed and alone despite the fact that nothing in my personal or professional life has changed in the past month or so.

I called my Dr thinking this was PPD but the nurse told me it couldn't be since PPD comes on right after birth and told me i should call Psych. I googled PPD after I hung up and it seems this could be PPD. I am so frustrated right now since I feel I need to talk to someone and don't feel calling Psych is the answer since I feel this is PPD (I have no history of depression or mood swings).

Your thoughts? Should I call the  nurse back and insist I feel this is PPD and insist I see someone from the Women's Health Center or just call the Psych unit and get an appointment.

In your experience does PPD only come on right after birth or is 3.5 months a reasonable amount of time for PPD to present itself.

  • I'm not a professional, but I would say this is PPD too. I've had similar symptoms and they didn't start until my DD was 9 months old. I've read numerous articles about PPD symptoms the past week and the consensus seems to be that it can start anytime in the first year after giving birth. I would insist on an appointment. You know yourself and your body better than anyone else and if you don't think something is right, then it probably isn't. I'm seeing my family practice doctor today about it. Good luck to you!

  • That nurse is an idiot. I just went to see my doctor about PPD and my son is 5 months old. I felt okay the first few months. My understanding is that PPD can come on anytime in the first year after giving birth.

I would call back and insist to see whoever you intended to see, that nurse doesn't know what she is talking about. I hope you get some answers soon! (((hugs)))

    This! Exactly!

  • Looking back I think with DD1 mine never started until she was about 6 months old. It can start anytime in the first year after having baby!  I would definitely call someone to get an appointment!
  • Deffinetely give the Dr's office a call back and hopefully you'll get to speak to a nurse that actually knows what shes talking about.

Also......have you considered the possibility that it might be your bc?  Did you go on something different after your child was born that may be altering your moods? BC can cause havoc on your hormones and its something that a lot of women forget to consider.  Just something to consider because I never had any depression/anxiety history until I had a hormonal inbalance due to my bc.

  • PPD can come on anytime in the first YEAR. Definitely get a second opinion.

  • PPD can happen anytime w/in the first year after giving birth.  Mine didn't smack me in the face until my son was 7 months old!  Your nurse is wrong.  You can call back, but I recommend seeing a specialist anyway...they know more about this stuff that OB/GYN anyway.  I still see a therapist a psych and take meds and my son is 2 now.  Don't wait or things could get worse.  I wish I would have spoken up sooner so things wouldn't have gotten out of control, like they did.  Good luck!

    This. This. And This.

  • Hi there, I actually am a professional in the maternity/family practice area...and PPD can occur anytime after 2 weeks.. like others have mentioned though, I would recommend seeing a specialist. Your OB/GYN will probably give you a prescription but it is a good idea to see someone that you can 'talk' to as well.
