Hyphen in a middle name?

We're thinking of using both the names of LO2's Great Grandmas for her middle name. I don't really want her to have 2 middle names, so I'm wondering is it okay to use a hyphen?

The middle name would be Vera-Grace.

Thoughts?

Re: Hyphen in a middle name?

  • I prefer the hypen when two names are used in the MN spot. I still see two middle name but the seem to flow better. Often when I see two MN without the hyphen the name seems clunky.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It helps with the flow too.

  • Yeah, I'd say hyphen.
  • I think it works because they flow well together!

  • I agree with the PPs. :)
  • IMO, a hyphen doesn't change the fact that it is two middle names.

DS has two MNs. One was added only a month before he was born to pay tribute to a loved one who died. His MNs are not something I use on a regularly basis. It's a non-issue, really.

I agree. I think it's silly to hyphenate middle names in most cases. Just use the 2 names and don't add unnecessary punctuation. I have 2 MNs and so does my DD, it's never been an issue.

  • I have a hyphenated mn, but it's my mother's surname + my father's surname. I sign my name with both middle initials, but everything official just uses the first.

I don't think there's much advantage to hyphenating a double middle name made up of two first names. Then again, it doesn't bother me either. That's a long and unhelpful way to say that you should do what feels right to you.

  • I have been debating the same thing. I don't want DD to have 2 middle names because it seems very pretentious to me, but since I can't decide between using my grandma's or my aunt's  name I suggested to DH to hyphenate the two. I like the idea and I would do it.  He says it's still two names and doesn't like it.  I think Vera-Grace is lovely.

  • I wouldn't use a hyphen because it isn't necessary. 2 MN's are fine.

All of this. I have two middle names, my son does too. A couple of people in my family do. I think a hyphen is really unnecessary. It flows either way. I don't see how a hyphen would make it flow any better because it's not like you are saying the word hyphen  o_O

I think the name you picked out is beautiful btw. minus the hyphen.

But I am also a fan of hyphenated middle names, lol.
