Wondering about dyslexia.

DD1 has autism. I'm wondering at what point dyslexia becomes a concern and/or can be identified?

She is really interesting in spelling out the letters of words lately and kind of starting to get into some pre-reading. As part of that, she's been semi-regularly mixing up lowercase b's and d's. Also, 2's and 5's on digital clocks. Typical, not typical?

She has never seemed to have trouble identifying individual letters -- I'm only really seeing it when she's listing off a series of letters in a word.

She generally seems to have some unusual spatial perception. Like, she often writes the letters of her name one on top of the other instead of next to each other. And she has always been able to identify letters and numbers even if they're upside down and backwards.

I'm just wondering if this is something to mentally file away and keep an eye on, or at what point I should mention it to her teachers/SpEd folks.

Re: Wondering about dyslexia.

  • Ds is dyslexic, but not asd. Switching letters is age appropriate, and not necessarily a sign of dyslexia. Honestly, Auntie is the expert and can give you the low down.

  • I was worried about the d/b thing and his teachers assured me that is age appropriate/normal development for him and up through 1st grade.  We are still thinking he may have some type of learning disability, but he wasn't old enough to be labeled with anything just yet.

  • Auntie - Most of these things we just haven't done. It never occurred to me to have her copy from a side-by-side paper or from a distance. Mostly right now when we practice handwriting with her, it's on an Aquadoodle. She's getting more fluid about letter writing, but it's often still a fairly laborious process because she seems to have some anxiety around writing and getting things just right. So sometimes she wants to sit and talk about which letter she's going to write, whether she knows how to do it or not, and how we're going to handle it if she doesn't remember -- she hates getting help, but is perfectionistic at the same time. *sigh*

Other times she just whizzes through words, particularly family and pet names that she's really familiar with. Although she does prefer to write letters one at a time, then erase and write the next, rather than write out the whole word.

I'll keeping an eye out for midline issues. But she's caught up on things like peddling and alternating feet on stairs, so I'm encouraged by that.

The overall curriculum for her preschool is Tools of the Mind, but I don't know what reading method that entails.

    Thanks, everybody!
