Breaking the passy??

Hello Toddler Mommies!

I have been told my the pedo to get rid of the passy before baby #2 comes...which is only 6 weeks to go. I've been trying for the last 4 days to get rid of it...and it's not going good.

Little background...she only had a passy once in the hospital when she was first born but they did it by accident they didn't realize that she was being nursed but they also, gave it to her since she was under the light for jundice. Then she never had a passy again until she was 6 months old. My mom gave it to her to get take a bottle. Which I wasn't to happy about but now she's stuck on it. Granted she only uses it to go to bed and I've been going in her room after about 20 mins and taking it away.

For those of you that have already broke her LO's of thier passys. Please let me know how you did it? I have just tried putting her to bed without it and she cries so we end up just giving it to her. I usually let her go for about 10 mins before I give it to her.

Thanks in advance for your help!! :)

  • I've heard cold turkey. Does she have some other thing she is bonded to? A blanket, toy? My son is only bonded to his binky and binky strap. I took it away during waking hours cold turkey. First day sucked, but he's doing well now. We'll do the same for naps, then nighttime. My goal is to have it gone by 2 yo.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • If she knows you are going to come in after 10 minutes of crying, she'll keep it up because she knows you'll give in.

Just go cold turkey.  Does she get it at naps?  Maybe try getting rid of at naps first and then at night.   Daycare lost his and so he stopped getting it at "school" and then we went cold turkey at home.  He looked for it and cried the first night but for less then a minute and then after 3 days he stopped looking for it.  We stopped around 15 months.

  • we went cold turkey and replaced it with a stuffed monkey instead. We originally just went cold turkey and the crying was still happening so we finally got the idea to give her a stuffed animal to sleep with. We've been pacifier free for 3 weeks and it's been AWESOME!!

  • We did the Bye Bye Binky method which worked pretty well.  He did eventually throw them away because they were "broken" but it took a few weeks for him to fully learn how to settle himself without it.  You can google BBB.

Although I have to say, I'm not sure I'd do it right before the new baby comes.  Poor thing is going to have enough disruption.  But I'm not a pedi.

  • You could try the snipping the tip of the binky method.  Also, if you have decided to go cold turkey or whenever you decide that enough is enough, get rid of them.  Get them out of your house.  So you are not tempted to give in.  You won't have an option.  And giving in after 10 minutes is way too short of a time.

  • I feel like I should start trying to break Z of her paci too, but I'm terrified! She only gets it at naps and bed time, but still. I would also suggest going cold turkey and like a pp said, I will make sure there are none in the house so I'm not tempted to give in, and I think this is the method I'm going to use when I finally decide to grow a pair LOL Good luck!!
