18 month old and hitting

So my son hits me all e time, and sometimes he will hit my husband, mother and my father! He only does it while we are holding it but there is no warning. He is a very happy kid and he will kiss you one second and then all of a sudden BAM! When he does this I tell him no and put him down, I just don't get where it is coming from??? Anyone else having this problem? Last week at the library he hit my husband and ended up scratching his cornea! I'm hoping this is just a phase - I have heard no concern at his pre-school (he goes only goes though two days a eek- both half days).

  • I just read this over and I referred to my son as "it" --- stupid auto correct on the iPad!

  • You're not alone. My 19 month old DS does the same thing. He rarely does it to my husband. It always seems to be me. He also throws toys at me all the time inclucding my face. It is sooooooo frustrating. I wish he would grow out of it but he has been doing it since before he was 1.

  • Ds does this to everyone. Saying "no hitting" and putting him down doesn't make it stop. We've started giving "high fives" instead, so when he raises up his hand, we say, "yay, high five" and let him give us a high five. 70 off the time now he will hold up his hand and wait for you to high five. The rest of the time he still whacks.

This is my life right now. I'm at a loss on what to do about it.

  • Mine grabs and pinches my face after the hitting has been corrected. The other day I looked like I went 10 rounds with the cat. With her I have linked it to over stimulation and/or boredm... I correct the behavior and quickly move to another activity. If we are inside I suggest taking the dog for a walk, if we are upstairs I suggest we go downstairs and check the laundry or grab a snack. etc... Doesn't always work but most of the time we are over it with out to much drama. Keeping that in mind I pay more attention to what leads up to the behavior and switch gears before it happens....
